My son has a hugely Scottish and hugely unusual name. We didn't know another. Someone else in the same maternity ward named her child the same as mine lol!

Woah! Did not realise my thread would cause such a stir! We do have some common names on our list too, just wanted opinions on our more 'different' names.
I dont by any means expect her to be the only X guarenteed- I simply liked the fact no one had my name at school, and so wanted a not too out there but also not really over used name. I am not the exotic zaney person this thread has made me out to be, on are list is Elizabeth, Charlotte, Grace and Sophia too. We just trust they are acceptably nice names to the majority so didnt ask for opinions.
Certainly got the opinions though!! Thanks.
BTW Liberty would be a Libby and Tigerlilly was DDs input!! DD used to go to nursery school a long time ago with a lovely Tigerlilly. The dad was drummer in Queen, Roger Taylor! Hence she got away with the exotic name. Kyra is pn Ky-ra and Ailie is pn Ay-lee, Oonagh is pn una. (All written off now!)
Any other comments!?

I love Sophia and Grace in particular is a classic, gorgeous name which suits all ages.

Hope we weren't too mean with our comments Smile

Liberty --shame about the sts. How about Trinity?
Tigerlilly -- would you consider Leilani?
Callie -- a bit nicknamey
Darcy -- I can't stop hearing 'arse' right there in the middle
Octavia -- considered posh in the UK but would be very downmarket in the US
Kyra -- unusual but sounds a bit harsh to my ear, and rhymes slightly with pyre
Thea -- popular (nice though)
Oonagh --gorgeous, prefer Una spelling
Ailie -- nice sound, unusual, makes me think of Alvin Ailey (dancer, choreographer)
Kitty -- popular
Freya -- popular
Lydia -- popular
Fenella -- horsey imo
Mimi -- nice as nn for Miriam or Mary
Hanna -- very 70s
Tegan -- people who choose Tegan want to advertise their Oirishness without realising it's a Welsh name (afaik)

I would be tempted to choose Karen, Kim or Kay. (seriously)

One of my DDs has a name that is way down in the 700s and who did she meet on the first day of Kindergarten? They are the only children the school has ever had with that name.

Ailie is quite a common name in Scotland. So once you pick your name, you probably shouldn't move house or she might fall foul of regional variations!

I don't remember anybody with my name throughout primary and junior high school (I have a classic very popular (top 5) 1970s name).
There were two others in three of my high school classes one year, though.

What were your grandmothers & great-grandmothers called, OP? One of my grandmothers has a name that reached its peak in the 1930s when a massive 700 girls got called it (US statistics). So my 86yo grandmother has never met anybody else with her name in her whole life.

Please... this is a future adult you're naming, hoping for some kind of professional respect... Confused

I prefer Grace and Sophia to the other names you've listed. Sophia Grace would be a lovely name :)

From your longlist I like Lydia, Mimi (as a nickname) and Hannah (with an "h" at the end).

As already mentioned DC1 top 10 name only one in class, DC2 rather more unusual, nowhere near top 10 and two in the class.

You can't win! But just remember that this little one will still have the same name when they are 50,60, 70 and 80 so be kind! What is cute on a baby can often be a little silly on an adult!

I've met a few from your list, in our local primary there's a Kyra and a Tegan, and I know of Liberty's, Darcey's and Thea's.

I think any name in the top 100 is used widely enough that your child is likely to have at least one other in her class/school.

But if you look beyond these top 100 or even top 250 most popular names you are likely to find lots of names that will not be represented in your child's class or school.

And, as many have said, names like Sarah, Fenella, Ursula, Antonia, Carla, Serraphina for example (I'm guessing, as don't know where these are on the list) are lovely, classic, well known names that aren't already used by thousands of others (maybe tens or hundreds, but not thousands).

In other words, any name that is 'trendy' will be chosen by lots of parents whereas names that are currently 'out of fashion' are likely to be chosen less frequently - but they are still nice classic names Smile.

My two have very popular classic biblical names and were the only ones in their class all the way through primary.

OP, if you have a look at the ONS list (see other thread) you can see how many times your suggested names were used last year. Fenella was used only 10 times whereas Kitty was used 260 times - that gives you an objective measure as to how common a name is.

p.s. I like Fenalla.

Will she be the only one in the class?

Octavia and Fenella - entirely depends what school you go to.

Tegan, Liberty and Darcy - ditto

Hannah probably not, although I think the Hannah craze is on the wane

Kitty and Freya almost definitely not

Ailie - probably, unless you are in Scotland

Tigerlilly - yes, but why would you?

Callie, Kyra, Lydia - probably

Thea, Oonagh, Mimi, probably but you'll have to get in quick.

Liberty: Not really unless your Dd is a statue

Tigerlilly: can only think about Peter Pan when I hear it

Callie: I never heard it before but quite like it

Darcy : I love that name (so does my DD as she names every single one of her dolls Darcy) I have seen it more lately so petentially could be 2 in your Dd's class.

Octavia: really lovely

Kyra: not for me but not ugly

Thea: I love! I like very short names for girls

Oonagh: I love

Ailie:see Kyra

Kitty:Too much hello Kitty stuff available arround, could potentially be teased? but nice name nevertheless

Freya: Really nice

Lydia: I do not like but for no particular reason

Fenella: really nice

Mimi: was the nickname my dad gave me (nothing to do with my first name though) and I struggle to see it as a "real" name.

Hanna:nice but never saw that spelling (always Anna or Hannah)

Tegan: I would put this one on the "names I cannot decide if I like or not" list.

Overall, you have thought of very nice names.

For what it's worth, when I was at secondary school there were thirteen of us in the same year with the same name. I was "Firstname Surname" all my school life as there were four of us with the same initial letter of our surname. I hated it. It's not blighted my life but ? One thing I would say is that these days there are far more names being used overall, so the chances of there being lots of children with the same name in the same class is much less. My three children all have straightforward, classic names. All are the only ones in their (albeit quite small primary) school with their name. Chose names you love; it's the only way.

My son is in a was in a very small year group in primary school - out of about 30 kids there were 7 Jameses!

In our Scout group last year we had 4 Jacks and 3 Charlies - with two of the Jacks sharing the same surname initial - very annoying for everyone involved.

Yes, we should chose a name we love but we should also think about the child who we are naming i.e. identifying and try to avoid following fashion trends too much (although it is often hard as we're all influenced by the same trends and fashion).

Fenella was only used 10 times last year.

And all these compare to 5,300 Olivias born last year!

Liberty - Sanitary towels
Tigerlilly - For the love of god NO!
Callie - Boring
Darcy - Too masculine
Octavia - This is actaully quite popular
Kyra - Maybe
Thea - Very popular, I know 2 of these from friends / colleauges
Oonagh - awful
Ailie -? How do you say it?
Kitty - Very popular, she wont be the only one
Freya - Very popular, she wont be the only one
Lydia -Ok
Fenella - Sounds like a vegetable
Mimi - Very popular, she wont be the only one
Hanna -Very popular, she wont be the only one
Tegan - It's ok

It's impossible to know how trends will change. Why don't you just pick a name you love without worrying about the popularity. I love the name Amelie and will use it for a DD, I don't care that it is very popular.

Report
mopsyflopsy · 29/08/2011 20:54

Some names are definately much more popular than others, as previous posters have already pointed out (see ONS statistics).

Personally I like Thea and Fenella. But all names on OP's list are much less widely used than current top 10 names (which have been used over 1000s of times) so I think the chance of sharing a name will be much smaller than a top 10 name.
