You could opt for:

Barbara
Maureen
Doreen
Wilma
Regina
Shirley

Not a single one of them at our primary. Or local secondary.

Amanda. Hazel. Heather. Susan. Angela. Sheila. If you want her to be the only X on the class, rhen choose something like this. But IT DOESN'T MATTER if there's another x in the class- she will be the only x who is her!

Thisisyesterdays you mean there are little theas in the world nooooooooop!

That can't be true....... But I suppose I'll get over it eventually - she's been the only one about locally for 18yrs though!

Liberty - Name of a child in the most awful, common, vulgar family I have had the misfortune to meet. Example: they were evicted from their house due to persistant complaints by neighbours.
Tigerlilly - The only one I know is from a scruffy family.
Callie - know 1 child
Darcy - nice name but not that unusual.
Octavia - Don't know any
Kyra - have heard this used but don't personally know any.
Thea - Don't know any but don't think it is that uncommon.
Oonagh - Don't know any, sounds quite an ugly name.
Ailie - never heard of this.
Kitty - seems to be getting more popular and more of a nn.
Freya - Not uncommon.
Lydia - Probably the nicest name on your list, but she won't be the only one in the universe called Lydia.
Fenella - fairly uncommon and nice too.
Mimi - fairly uncommon
Hanna- common (nice though)
Tegan - not unusual.

scottishmummy · 28/08/2011 00:19

you are a fan of badly spelt names
that doesn't bode well

thisisyesterday · 28/08/2011 00:31

Of your list I really like Thea but not a huge fan of the others.

Tigerlily is the name of a brothel in the city here. Appreciate that probably doesn't mean anything to you however it's what springs to mind for me.

exoticfruits · 28/08/2011 07:48

I think it is funny when a mother thinks she will be the only one in the class and she then goes through school with another-happens all the time!

Some on your list are very popular, Kyra, Thea, Kitty and Freya.
Hannah is lovely but I prefer the proper spelling.

seeker · 28/08/2011 07:51

And as I keep saying, 15 years ago, I thought I was giving my dd a charming unusual name that would ensure she was the only one around when I called her Grace!

exoticfruits · 28/08/2011 08:01

You may just as well go for the name that you really like and not try and try and pre-empt what others do. You could go for Emma and be the only one or Kitty and have 2 others-you really can't guess. You can't even try Winifred and Maud etc as they are making a comeback.
The only sure way, as already mentioned is call her Brenda or Barbara or Lesley or similar.

Scaevola · 28/08/2011 08:03

You just cannot guarantee that there will be no local family, or family moving to the area over the whole course of a school career, with a same name child. Nor can you future-proof a name. Which would seem worse - choosing a name you love, and accepting the possibility at others love it too - or striving for uniqueness but finding it thwarted? Because I know two little Tigers - they don't go to the same school, but do live within a couple of streets of each other and encounter each other a lot - and people make more of this pairing than they would of two Sophies. The only way to be sure to get "unique" is to invent a name.

From your list I know more than one Tiger(lilly), Liberty, Darcey, Thea and Freya and Hannah. I know one Kitty, Kyra and Oonagh (though I think she uses a different spelling), plus one nn Mimi. That leaves Callie (nn for Calliope? Doesn't sound "finished" by itself), Octavia, Ailie, Lydia, Fenella and Tegan.

BikeRunSki · 28/08/2011 08:05

My sister was one of 3 with "the same name in her class (and two with the same surname initial) and 9 in her year group of about 200. It's a nice name and it did not matter to anyone.

The name is Zoe btw, bet that would be fairly unique now.

exoticfruits · 28/08/2011 08:07

I always had another of my name in my class. I didn't mind-it was far preferable to my parents being 'original'.

ShoutyHamster · 28/08/2011 11:12

Don't call her X, it's mean.

BlowHole · 28/08/2011 11:19

They're all names that people think are "individual" and unusual and "quirky" but in reality are fairly common.

tammy234 · 28/08/2011 12:06

OP, have you had a look at the ONS statistics - you can see how often each of your suggested names has been used each year. Most of them would be outside the top 20 or 50 I'd think (so not as common as a top 10 name for example).

I like Tegan and Octavia from your list. But as others have said there are lots and lots of underused classic names outside the top 100.

UrsulaBuffayHere2Help · 28/08/2011 12:10

If you call her something unusual people will immediately tell you about another they know or have heard of as if they've caught you out somehow, I bet if you introduced her as Emma they'd just say 'lovely'.

hocuspontas · 28/08/2011 12:15

I agree with Shouty, she'll be forever correcting the spelling. Ex, Ecks, Xz etc.

DoMeDon · 28/08/2011 12:35

Call her 'My mum's a bit zany' - will clear up any confusion and it's all about you Wink

Sorry but I don't like any of them. Call her Athena.

Oh, and instead of Thea, what about Rhea, which is lovely.

exoticfruits · 28/08/2011 16:01

Rhea is a flightless bird from South America-similar to calling a DC Ostrich!

GoingToHelenaHandcart · 28/08/2011 16:02

come on, I didn't suggest naming her Orville!
