Obviously it is a child's personality that defines it, not its name.

We name people so that we can identify them. If that name is already used by thousands of others (including lsurname - I too actually know a few John Smiths and Steve Smiths) then that becomes much harder. Not the end of the world, but harder. Some people don't mind, other do. There is no point arguing about this over and over. The OP seems to prefer a name that isn't already used by lots of others.

Ds has the most popular boys name. He was the only one with his name at nursery and is the only one with his name in his year at school. I didn't know it was the most popular name when I chose it as I didn't bother to look at name lists when I was deciding.

I chose the name I liked and it suits ds very well. I think it is very easy to get caught up in choosing a name that is different and individual when in fact it is a child's personality that will make them memorable rather than their name.

OP Just give your daughter the name that you like best.

Have faith in her to make it as beautiful as you like.

She will, and everybody that meets her will associate her name with her personality, and afterwards love her name.

Here we are Lockets - it began to be given as a name after La Boheme was staged, after the character Mimi (who incidentally sings "They call me Mimi, but my name is Lucia"). Before that it was a pet name for Marilyn or Miriam. So the character in the opera had Mimi as a nickname but parents liked it and began to give it as a baby name. Interesting to see its evolution, yes?

Mimi is indeed a well established name Zander is the nn for Cosima vv popular 300 years ago, name features in quite a few operas. Am bit that OP list features extremes as in Octavia and Tegan

When we were at school, there wasn't the bother about calling people (eg) Sarah H, Sarah J, Sarah, K etc. They were all known by nicknames that related to their surnames. So Sarah Jackson, say, would be Jacko; Sarah Chapman would be Chappers and Sarah Moore would be Mo. Half our class had surname-nicknames, as there were so many Rachels, Sarahs, Katherines and Elizabeths!

My dd is only one of two children with the same name in the whole of her 3 class year group. Both have the same letter for their surname too . We named our children names that we liked. Didn't care about anyone else.

A mum in the coffee group was not happy when I named my child the same name as she had named hers but why would I change it and we don't see them now any way so I would have changed it for no benefit or reason.

Some names are definately much more popular than others, as previous posters have already pointed out (see ONS statistics).

Personally I like Thea and Fenella. But all names on OP's list are much less widely used than current top 10 names (which have been used over 1000s of times) so I think the chance of sharing a name will be much smaller than a top 10 name.

It's impossible to know how trends will change. Why don't you just pick a name you love without worrying about the popularity. I love the name Amelie and will use it for a DD, I don't care that it is very popular.

In our Scout group last year we had 4 Jacks and 3 Charlies - with two of the Jacks sharing the same surname initial - very annoying for everyone involved.

Yes, we should chose a name we love but we should also think about the child who we are naming i.e. identifying and try to avoid following fashion trends too much (although it is often hard as we're all influenced by the same trends and fashion).
