I'm due dc3 in 8 weeks - a boy. Can you give your opinions/preferences on these two names?

Ralph or Rafe (nn at home Raffie)

Wilfred (nn Wil or Wilf (really not keen on Fred)

What do you think??

Wilfrid

fuckityfuckfuckfuck · 21/08/2011 21:44

Are they family names? I once went out with a Ralph who HATED it. It means being sick to a lot of people, and readers of Judy Blume will certainly have associations.....
The only Wilf I know is a dog but actually I do like it as a name.

If you go with Ralph, would it be RaLph or RaYph? RaLph yes, RaYph no.

Quite like Wilf.

Congratulations!

Out of the two names, I definitely prefer Ralph.

Its an unusual name to hear around now but its got a nice catch to it :)

Best wishes

I love Wilf.

I'm pg atm and he'll be called Raphael nn Rafe or Rafa or whatever sticks so I clearly quite like those variations. DD for example is called SquiggsyBob which has very little to do with her given name.

wearenotamused · 21/08/2011 21:49

I don't like Wilfred at all and really don't like Wilf. Can't really see it on a teen or someone 20s/30s.

I'm guessing as you have Ralph or Rafe then you are going for the old pronounciation of Ralph (as in Finnes) If you are with Ralph people wont generally pronounce it as that (they will pronounce it sounding the L Ral-ff)
Either way Rafe looks better and a bit funkier somehow.

So Rafe

Wilf! So cute!
Know a Ralph though and he's a cutie too - but Ralph has Judy Blume memories for all those teens from the 80s Blush

mopsyflopsy · 21/08/2011 21:54

Ralph definately! Ralph is classic, masculine and works well in most languages.

I don't like Wilfred at all, I'm afraid. Nor do I like Wilf, Will or Willy.

Wow, love it! So much insight in under 10 minutes - Thanks v m!!

Neither family names just our preference at the moment. I also like Casper and Ruben very much but they'd both involve a (probably only short lived) campaign on DH.

I prefer Ralph.

I'm not keen on Wil names (teasing potential Willy - silly school boys are very imaginative...).

Iamkenny · 21/08/2011 22:10

Ralph (Guessing Ray-ff) would get mispronounced with Rafe no problem. It is alright not setting me alight. But it would work througout your DS life which is always good
Wilfred - no
Casper - is okay
Ruben - is again alright, looks better with an e (Reuben) I like nn Rue

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 21/08/2011 22:14

I like Wilfred/Will/Fred but really don't like Ralph. Don't like Casper.

rachel1970 · 21/08/2011 22:17

Ralph is lovely. I prefer it pronounced Ralph (not Rafe) as that is what I'm used to (that's also how it is pronounced in Germany for example, where it is reasonably common).

Really dislike Wilfred - both the Wil/Wilf and the Fred part, sorry.

InstantAtom · 21/08/2011 22:27

Don't like Ralph or Wilfred I'm afraid - too "old man".

Casper and Reuben both very nice. Personally I prefer Caspar spelling.

HenriettaFarthingay · 21/08/2011 22:27

Ralph, however, pronounced, is ok. Sorry, but Wilfred is an old man's name, and makes me think of Wilfred Pickles.

exoticfruits · 21/08/2011 22:57

I dislike them both-equally.

LittlePushka · 21/08/2011 23:14

I had an Uncle Ralph but his was pronounced "Rahf"
