Matilda - just how popular is it?

I have loved this name for years - it has become more popular recently and is now in the middle or thereabouts of the top 100 girls' names charts and the most common response to it on this board is that is 'too popular/faddy' etc.

I don't know any Matildas at all - how many do you know if you don't mind me asking? Thank you!

It's going back down the charts now. I have always said I'd have a Matilda, since being very young. There are Matildas in my family going back a couple of hundred years so don't feel it's faddy at all.

DD is the only Matilda in her large primary school and there were none at her preschool either. Actually, never met another one. She's a Tilda though, can't abide Tilly.

I don't know any and I don't think I've ever met a Matilda, or Tilly come to think of it

I'm in the North West

If you love it then go for it Smile

I know 1 Matilda.

vividgingerchilli · 17/08/2011 22:07

I know of one, but it was a sheep - nicknamed Tilly.
I've never come across one in any of the schools I've worked in - about 6 schools over 15 years.

I know one aged three, one aged about 15 and one in her mid-late thirties.

There was a girl at school called Mathilde, the French version, which I always thought was a lovely name.

I have an 18mo Mathilda - other kids always naturally shorten it to Tilda - which I like as it is closest to her given name, whereas Tilly or Mattie sound completely different.

I have only ever met one other Mathilda who was around the same age as DD.

TrompetteMilitaire · 17/08/2011 22:20

I know several. Two are known as Matty, which isn't an abbreviation I'd choose.

manicinsomniac · 17/08/2011 22:58

I only know 2, one aged 8 and one aged 4.

I do know a 12 year old Tilly but I believe she was Christened Tilly.

Ooh - quite a lot of favourable responses - great thanks!

I know 2 - one is 2, the other is 37...

I know a Tilly (Matilda) who is 5 months old. It was a name we liked but I was 3 months pg when my friend chose the name for her dd. Matilda is now going to be dd2's middle name. Love it though.

I know a few. One Matilda, one Mathilda, one Mathilde and a Tilly (who was named that and not Matilda). All are between four and seven.
