Does Felix make you think of a cat?

It's the top contender for my six-week old son (I have to get a move-on). I know it's associated with cats, but really that strongly? My aunt said flat-out it would be cruel to call him Felix. I said he looked like a Felix and my Mum said, but does he have a tail?
Am fed up because I really can't think of many names...

yes

It's not just a brand of cat food, it is a very popular cartoon that was on for years and years, with a really catchy theme tune. So whenever, I hear the name, the song pops into my head :

"Felix the cat!
The wonderful, wonderful cat,
Whenever he gets in a fix, he reaches into his bag of tricks ... Etc etc"

To me, it's on a par with calling a child Kermit on the basis that it is a fine old Irish name (which it is) and surely everyone has forgotten about the frog by now.

Reminds me of James Bond!! Which is where I first heard the name and liked it!

PippiLongBottom · 11/08/2011 16:22

I call my DS2 'Felix the boy cat' to the cartoon theme tune.

Why don't you stick to his original, name Kaleo. Much nicer, less used and less cat like. Plus, from your other thread I get the impression that you like his name and are calling him this already.

pilates · 11/08/2011 18:11

Yes, have you got any others you like?

What are you going to use for a middle name?

LetThereBeRock · 11/08/2011 18:50

Not really. It's a gorgeous name. I wouldn't hesitate to use it.

Yes, sorry

OddBoots · 11/08/2011 18:59

If you like it then use it but yes, my first thought is 'Cat'.

MumtoF · 11/08/2011 19:05

Its a great name - I have one and he is a very happy cheeky boy so lives up to his name! I had the same hesitation as you but I love the name and have no regrets. Brands are always on the look out for new names so at least you know what you are getting into with Felix as it is already taken. Plus association with a Cat is not too bad. Octavia's are Skoda's, Flora's are easy to spread etc etc

breatheslowly · 11/08/2011 19:20

Yes, definitely. That and Oscar are definitely cat names to me.

PippiLongBottom · 11/08/2011 20:38

My DS2 is Felix Oscar Grin

katiecubs · 12/08/2011 14:58

My DS (one tomorrow) is called Felix and i also had similar concerns but i am so glad we went with what WE wanted. I have had nothing but positive reactions from people and i can't imagine him being called anything else. Felix just makes me think of a cheeky little boy :) you should just go with what you want and don't worry about what other people say/think x

katiecubs · 12/08/2011 15:01

oh and like others have said i figured that even if people did associate it with a 'cat' then so what as cats are cool anyway right?! it's hardly a bad association! x

I would think of the cat food. Wouldn't let that put you off though, once it's his name it'll be associated primarily with him in the minds of everyone who knows him, rather than cat-related stuff.

Suncottage · 12/08/2011 15:08

This is a bit random but the name Felix in France is considered a bit well, erm sort of on a par, with Wayne, Darren, Kevin, Dean...................get the picture?Blush

But unless you go to live in France.......fine.

PippiLongBottom · 12/08/2011 15:21

Suncottage, I for one knew that because my parents live in France and there is always great hilarity when they share the names of their grandchildren.

Strix · 12/08/2011 15:34

Felix is a fab name. And I hate cats.

flissyfloss · 12/08/2011 16:22

Hi, my son's name is Felix. He's 5 and loves his name (and Felix the cat funnily enough - he has the Tshirt and likes the theme tune, although none of his little friends will have heard of him anyway - only old people!). I obviously think it's a cool name, it's never going to be in the top 20 boys names (a good thing in my book), and never going to become scallyish. (Jayden / Jaiden!?) i'm pregnant at the moment, so for me, it's just that I can't think of a name I like as much that's not too pretentious, not too popular!

posterofawolef · 12/08/2011 16:24

Felix is lovely. That is all.

susiedaisy · 12/08/2011 16:25

sorry, but felix to me and my kids is a cats name, isnt there a cat food named that as well.

Quenelle · 12/08/2011 16:58

It does make me think of a cat at the moment but if I knew a boy called Felix I would forget the cat association pretty quickly.

emmanumber3 · 12/08/2011 21:42

You asked and yes, sorry, to me it will always be a cat's name. Like Rex will always be a dog's name.
