Guilty Pleasures

I am sure this has been done to death - but would be interested to know what names you adore but would never use for one reason or another.... it would be great if you could put the name and the meaning too.

I'll start - Absolutely adore the name Lola.

Mum said to me (scathingly) ''So out of all the names there are in the World, Lola is the classiest, most elegant name you can think of for a future child to wear?''

Is it just me who, at the age of thirty can regress to sulky teen at sight of mother's disapproving face? Lol

Anyway, let's hear em . . . the good, the bad and the downright wierd...

algernon nn algie love this as a possible name but when i mentioned it to dd age 14 she just laughed and said "like the algae that grows in ponds" , making it now a definite no

persephone love this but it's meaning being bringer of death means i could never risk it , being a superstitious idiot .

There are quite a few names whose meaning would put me off (e.g. Claudia = lame/disabled, Hector = bully/tormentor).

Other than that, I'd avoid any very popular (e.g. top 10 or 20 names) because I hated being one of 3 in my class at school.

Love Ria but DH says it sounds too much like rear.

Coco. It's just so cute and lovely. But I have visions of coco-the-clown remarks.

I also love Casper. But can't see past the ghost connection. And also Jasper but DH said we aren't posh enough for a Jasper. This is probably true as our children will no doubt attend the village primary school (unless we win the lottery and/or stop going on holidays and generally eating) and Jasper/Casper and Coco may be a tad pretentious.

River Phoenix, I think its beautiful and cool and would be so unique if it wasnt for that damn actor! and im not brave enough anyway

I have always loved Sebastian but DH didn't like it.

I love Lola too.
My DH said he couldn't wait to see her face when we told her.
I now have two boys!
She thinks Lily is a weird name too.
She is 70 though.
If I had a daughter she would be called Lola, still.

I think Eastenders has ruined Lola!

I think my main guilty pleasure is Blossom! Apparently only suitable for a cow/powerpuff girl! :-(

Most of the others I'd still consider using, even if they get slagged off a bit on mumsnet!

Jago - I can't help thinking people would think we were saying it wrong, instead of realising it was Cornish

Apollo, I love it, I've loved it since I was about 14, I will always love it...

Unfortunately no one else seems to. It inspires to many negative or just plain dull associations for people, ranging from some very bad behaviour of the original holy owner, to bicycles, to unlucky spacecraft. It's even the design name of my bathroom light, a fact I notice every time I shower .

Maybe I need a puppy.

Hepzibah after Carrie's War (yes there may be a theme here! I first heard of the name Loveday in The Little White Horse).

Popsicle - I don't watch Eastenders - is there a negative character in it?

Blossom makes me think of that jewish teenager living in a house with her hot older brother and wacky best mate, Six.

Bruffin - Sebastian is my no2 fave baby boys name, first being Seth. That's not so much as a guilty pleasure as more a 'given'. First boy will deffo be a Seth. It's only with girls that I go off on random flights of fancy... :)

Ozymandias. I'd never use it,but I'd love to have an Ozzy.

Anakin.I'm a Star Wars geek,but even if I wasn't I'd still love it.

Gretl. I really, really wanted to call DD1 Gretl, it's lovely and I don't understand why it's not really made it to the UK names lists ever.

Obvious reason why I can't use it- everyone else hates it.

I really love Stanley. I don't know why. But I'm not going to use it. It ain't the 1940's. I don't live in a cobbled hill town and don't want him born complete with flat cap and pipe!

I forgot Pepper for a girl.

Arwin for a girl.

Lord of the Rings tribute perhaps too cheesy. Although using a name from another book may be more acceptable - why?

Darcy for a boy - similar reason, just too cheesy.

I'd love Agamemnon for a boy. No reason required for the 'no', I think.

DD2 was going to be Cassie until (while v pregnant) I was walking through the park with DD1 and someone was shouting "Cassie" and a big black labrador bounced past me.

Couldn't get past that one, still love the name though :)

Beatrice or Benedict (curse of the English teacher)

Darwin for a boy is another,as is Mercury Alexander.
