Is 'Beau' a boys name or a girls name?

And how is it pronounced?

It's a boy's name. It means 'handsome' in French and is pronounced 'Bo'.

The only one I know is a little girl! But otherwise I would have thought it was a boy's name.

Definitely a boys' name. People have erroneously used it for girls but it's a French masculine word. It's like calling a girl Trevor.

It's not liked on MN much but the most lovely little boy I know is a Beau and I love it.

It's nice but quite "romantic" - bit like calling a boy Romeo or Byron.

And it could be a bit of a burden if he wasn't good looking...

I would like it, but knowing a boy with that name who is quite a nasty little bully has put me off somewhat.

Louise Rednapp and Emma Bunton both have boys called Beau - don;t now if this a plus or minus, or neither, for you!

I think it is awful. It sounds more like an expression than a name.

It's definitely a boy's name (and I know one in RL).

It is French for a handsome male (or Regency slang for a dashing man-about-town), and is pronounced "Bo".

I knew one at uni - lovely guy but unfortunately did not live up to his name at all and was a bit embarrassed about it as a result. I do hope he grew into it eventually.

Makes me think of them calling their boyfriends beaus/beaux in Little Women, What Katy Did, Anne of Green Gables etc. So as above - fine if he's confident and good looking!

i love the name but said with my accent it just sounds wrong!
