Is 'Beau' a boys name or a girls name?

And how is it pronounced?

It's a boy's name. It means 'handsome' in French and is pronounced 'Bo'.

evamummy · 05/08/2011 15:21

It is the male version of Belle.

thisisyesterday · 05/08/2011 15:22

it's a boys name.
pronounced Bo

i love it

Ephiny · 05/08/2011 15:47

The only one I know is a little girl! But otherwise I would have thought it was a boy's name.

mopsyflopsy · 05/08/2011 16:01

Definately a boys name.

ShowOfHands · 05/08/2011 16:05

Definitely a boys' name. People have erroneously used it for girls but it's a French masculine word. It's like calling a girl Trevor.

It's not liked on MN much but the most lovely little boy I know is a Beau and I love it.

KatieScarlett2833 · 05/08/2011 16:06

Love it, very Gone With The Wind.

minipie · 05/08/2011 16:42

It's nice but quite "romantic" - bit like calling a boy Romeo or Byron.

And it could be a bit of a burden if he wasn't good looking...

AuntEnna · 05/08/2011 16:44

I would like it, but knowing a boy with that name who is quite a nasty little bully has put me off somewhat.

BertieBasset · 05/08/2011 16:46

Louise Rednapp and Emma Bunton both have boys called Beau - don;t now if this a plus or minus, or neither, for you!

BertieBasset · 05/08/2011 16:47

know!!!!! Blush

carabos · 05/08/2011 17:44

Its lovely but very much depends on the surname.

pranma · 05/08/2011 18:03

I know a lovely one year old boy twin named Beau
Kirsty['location location'-forget her surname]has a Beau too.

Journey · 05/08/2011 18:12

I think it is awful. It sounds more like an expression than a name.

poppydaisy · 05/08/2011 19:22

Yes, boys name and I know a lovely 6 year old.

EdithWeston · 05/08/2011 19:25

It's definitely a boy's name (and I know one in RL).

It is French for a handsome male (or Regency slang for a dashing man-about-town), and is pronounced "Bo".

usualsuspect · 05/08/2011 19:26

I love it

ShowOfHands · 05/08/2011 19:29

Kirstie Allsopp has a Bay iirc. [AshamedIEvenKnowThat]

Beauregard · 05/08/2011 19:40

I love it ,was on our boys name list.

spiderlight · 05/08/2011 22:23

I knew one at uni - lovely guy but unfortunately did not live up to his name at all and was a bit embarrassed about it as a result. I do hope he grew into it eventually.

Have you considered Beauden?

Kayano · 05/08/2011 22:36

I LOVE the name beau, but our surname is horn....

Baby would get blow horn I just know it!
I'm gutted

TangerineQueen · 06/08/2011 01:24

Makes me think of them calling their boyfriends beaus/beaux in Little Women, What Katy Did, Anne of Green Gables etc. So as above - fine if he's confident and good looking!

Rhubarbgarden · 06/08/2011 07:50

I know two baby boys called Beau. I think it's quite trendy round here.

tammytoby · 07/08/2011 11:18

I like Beau.

LadyWithNoManors · 07/08/2011 11:19

i love the name but said with my accent it just sounds wrong!
