Has anyone any ideas of strong/unusual English names for boys?

I have a Gabriel :)

I know some say it's poncey etc but I think it's a strong boys name and not popular at all where we are.

Renaissance227 · 03/08/2011 15:57

I like it but my DP doesn't.
Plus, its Hebrew and reminds me of Thomas Hardy's character Gabriel Oak!

It is unusual though Smile

Yes I realised when I posted that it's Hebrew. I've not heard of Gabriel Oak, I'll have to have a google.

I also have a Joseph however that's also Hebrew and quite popular.

GetDownYouWillFall · 03/08/2011 16:04

Renaissance227 · 03/08/2011 16:04

Renaissance227 · 03/08/2011 16:14

Don't you think giving someone a name they will have to live with for the rest of their life is important and calls for being picky??!!! Smile

Going through cousins/uncles/father/in laws etc, I get the following list:

Thomas
John
Iain
Nicholas
Miles
William
Andrew
Cornelius (ny grandad, not really that serious a suggestion!)
Neil
Joseph
Matthew
Alexander
Kenneth
Daniel
Oliver
Peter
Christopher

Not that unusual (Cornelius excepted) but certainly strong names.

Renaissance227 · 05/08/2011 10:34

There are some good names here. Thank you.
Still haven't agreed on one yet though.
Any more suggestions? Slightly more unusual (but not silly) names?

Have a look at the ONS statistics from last year. There is a list with ALL boys name given last year (well, all those used at least twice). If you look beyond the top 100 or even top 250 you'll find some lovely underused names. There are around 5,000 to choose from Smile.

I like Arlo and Quentin but they seem to be getting more popular.
