On Tierney as a surname - Maura Tierney is the actress who played Abby in ER.

Thanks everyone :)

I think it's likely to be Rosanna (nn Rosie) or Caitlin

Good choices!

randomimposter · 28/07/2011 13:19

Both lovely... Can I put in a plea for Rosy not Rosie (just looks less twee)

BulletWithAName · 28/07/2011 13:31

Noooo Rosie is better, Rosy just looks odd (IMO) Grin

exoticfruits · 28/07/2011 14:05

Rosanna Caitlin sounds nice. I prefer Rosie.

stardustn · 28/07/2011 15:57

Just to check, am I right in thinking that the generally accepted spelling is Caitlin and pronounciation Kate-Lynn? I know that's not the traditional Irish way to pronounce it, but in England nowadays is that how most people would say it?

Looking at the 2010 name stats, I was surprised to see both Caitlyn and Kaitlyn inside the top 200, and also surprised that Rosanna was so low down at only number 840!

OP posts:
BulletWithAName · 28/07/2011 16:17

That's how I would pronounce Caitlin, yes.

mopsytop · 28/07/2011 16:19

Do you live in England? Saoirse is fine in Ireland of course, everyone knows it and how to pronounce and spell it, but in Britain that could cause problems. I know people with Irish names whose heads are wrecked with noone being able to pronounce or spell their name! I love Louisa myself!

mopsytop · 28/07/2011 16:20

p.s. as far as I know, Caitlin is an American name. I don't know a single Irish person called that. Cáit is the Irish for Cathy. I could be wrong of course, but I have only ever heard Caitlin in an American context.

mopsytop · 28/07/2011 16:21

(unless it comes from Caitlín? in which case it would be pronounced similarly to Kathleen)

pointydog · 28/07/2011 16:30

Yes I think it's that one and Kathleen was the anglicised vesion.

stardustn · 28/07/2011 17:59

Yes we live in England :) I think Saoirse is going to be relegated to only being considered as a middle name due to pronounciation and spelling issues, which is a shame :(

InstantAtom · 28/07/2011 18:05

You'd have people asking you how to pronounce Caitlin all the time.

BulletWithAName · 28/07/2011 18:07

Really? I thought it was a pretty well established, well known name...

reelingintheyears · 28/07/2011 18:11

Caitlin is my very favourite.

My Caitlin is 23 now..Smile

We say it as Katelin. My mum is Kathleen.

I also really like Roisin.

Pronounced Rosheen.

stardustn · 28/07/2011 18:28

InstantAtom Really? I don't really want a name with any serious debate on pronounciation as my name is constantly mispronounced

For what it is worth, DD1 was going to be Rosalie but we fo-und when we were telling people they kept pronouncing it 'Rosey-Lee' rather than to rhyme with Natalie and we really didn;t like that and didn't want a lifetime of correcting it for our daughter. My sister has a name which has two pronunciations and it drives her mad!

Still love the name though!

stardustn · 29/07/2011 11:13

sunshinejanuary Oh dear, it seems most of the names on the list have some kind of pronounciation issue! I would pronounce Rosalie as Rose-a-lee with a slight emphasis on the first syllable, if that makes sense :) I've also heard it said Roz-a-lee with a short o sound though.

At school one teacher always called a girl called Rosanna Ruz-AR-na, so I think even that has slightly debatable pronounciation, though most people would say Rose-anna I assume :)
