I'm sure she would thank you sunshinejanuary- it's a beautiful name :)

At the moment the frontrunner combination is Caitlin Saoirse Eden, but it changes regularly!

Well, I am very tempted to use it anyway if we have another girl, but she might not thank me! Having said that the rest of our names normally make people bulk so this might be the best course!

Does Eden as a middle name go with Caitlin? Or is it a little -en -en repetitive if that makes sense?

sunshinejanuary Oh dear, it seems most of the names on the list have some kind of pronounciation issue! I would pronounce Rosalie as Rose-a-lee with a slight emphasis on the first syllable, if that makes sense :) I've also heard it said Roz-a-lee with a short o sound though.

At school one teacher always called a girl called Rosanna Ruz-AR-na, so I think even that has slightly debatable pronounciation, though most people would say Rose-anna I assume :)

For what it is worth, DD1 was going to be Rosalie but we fo-und when we were telling people they kept pronouncing it 'Rosey-Lee' rather than to rhyme with Natalie and we really didn;t like that and didn't want a lifetime of correcting it for our daughter. My sister has a name which has two pronunciations and it drives her mad!

Still love the name though!

InstantAtom Really? I don't really want a name with any serious debate on pronounciation as my name is constantly mispronounced

Really? I thought it was a pretty well established, well known name...

You'd have people asking you how to pronounce Caitlin all the time.

Yes we live in England :) I think Saoirse is going to be relegated to only being considered as a middle name due to pronounciation and spelling issues, which is a shame :(

Yes I think it's that one and Kathleen was the anglicised vesion.

Report
mopsytop · 28/07/2011 16:21

(unless it comes from Caitlín? in which case it would be pronounced similarly to Kathleen)

p.s. as far as I know, Caitlin is an American name. I don't know a single Irish person called that. Cáit is the Irish for Cathy. I could be wrong of course, but I have only ever heard Caitlin in an American context.

Do you live in England? Saoirse is fine in Ireland of course, everyone knows it and how to pronounce and spell it, but in Britain that could cause problems. I know people with Irish names whose heads are wrecked with noone being able to pronounce or spell their name! I love Louisa myself!

BulletWithAName · 28/07/2011 16:17

That's how I would pronounce Caitlin, yes.

stardustn · 28/07/2011 15:57

Just to check, am I right in thinking that the generally accepted spelling is Caitlin and pronounciation Kate-Lynn? I know that's not the traditional Irish way to pronounce it, but in England nowadays is that how most people would say it?

Looking at the 2010 name stats, I was surprised to see both Caitlyn and Kaitlyn inside the top 200, and also surprised that Rosanna was so low down at only number 840!
