I am expecting DC2 in January so got a wee while to go! Dd is called Ava, thought it was quite different at time-obviously was not on mumsnet at the time!!

I really love the name Sylvie, but not sure if I'm brave enough to use it? I think it's really pretty and would suit a little girl and adult. Dh is not convinced and wants to use Skye which I'm not that keen on! Opinions please.

Prefer Sylvie to Skye, its growing on me......

ByTheSea · 23/07/2011 09:50

I like it.

PaperBank · 23/07/2011 10:14

Sylvie seems quite fashionable at the moment. Personally I prefer Sylvia and Skye.

Ephiny · 23/07/2011 20:33

Why would you have to be 'brave' to use it? Surely it's not that unusual a name - isn't it just the French version of Sylvia?

Personally I like Skye best, I think it's a really beautiful name.

I like Sylvie and Skye. Sylvie is cute and unusual for a girl and quite sexy for an adult. Rather depends on your surname... Would two syllables sound better than one?

tigercametotea · 23/07/2011 20:49

Sylvie, definitely.

BibiBelle · 23/07/2011 20:49

I love love love Sylvie and would use it as a nn for Sylvanna Smile

jellybeans · 23/07/2011 21:31

I love Skye. Sylvie is definately going to be popular soon I think.

chipmonkey · 24/07/2011 00:22

Sylvie is my girl name for this baby. However, as I have four boys already, I doubt I will get to use it!

razzlebathbone · 24/07/2011 20:54

Sylvie is absolutely beautiful. A fabulous name. Much nicer than Skye.

ellangirl · 24/07/2011 22:11

Sylvie, definitely. If you like French sounding names what about Delphine? I love that name!

MercyMe · 25/07/2011 16:43

Thanks everyone! It's really good to have such positive feedback.

When I said about being brave in using name was because all the people in real life have made this Hmm when I mentioned it. Great that not everyone hates it!

I really like Sylvie (DP told me it was too grannyish, and then we ended up having a boy anyway, but it will be back on the 'list' when DC2 comes along, I'm sure!).
I do think it's likely to go the same way as Ava, though, with hordes of parents in a few years' time going "we thought it was really unusual when we picked it, now it's everywhere!"

minipie · 25/07/2011 17:06

Really live Sylvie (DH likes it too which is rare Smile)

LetThereBeRock · 25/07/2011 17:35

Sylvie is beautiful yet strong. It's perfect.

normalshmormal · 25/07/2011 17:38

Love it. Much more than Skye.

Helps that I know an incredibly chic (French) Sylvie.

deste · 25/07/2011 20:59

Love Sylvie.

deste · 25/07/2011 20:59

Love Sylvie.

greenzebra · 25/07/2011 21:03

dont know any Sylvies myself but do know a Sylvanna which I think is very classy.

salvadory · 25/07/2011 21:19

Love Sylvie, my DD was very nearly one and if this one (also due in Jan) is a girl it's top of our list. Have loved it since I was a kid and read the Magic Faraway Tree (Sylvie was the fairy), much nice than Sylvia (breaking my unwritten rule that a name sounds nicer if it ends in 'a' rather than 'e') and Skye (IMVHO)

Dru6 · 26/07/2011 12:35

My daughter's name is Sylvie! My husband is French so we wanted a name that was spelt and pronounced the same in both languages. She was born in Jan 2009 and when I looked at the most popular name's list I think it was about 600th! The only person I have ever known called Sylvie is the sister of a girl I went to school with, and she was a lovely sweet girl. Hope it doesn't get too popular!

thelittlefriend · 26/07/2011 13:58

I hope it doesn't get popular too dru6 as I want to use it if we have another girl.

bigbutton · 26/07/2011 15:57

oh dear, it looks like it might be getting popular. Sylvie is the name we've chosen for the baby we're currently expecting (although this is the third definite final name that we've picked so far :) ) Hopefully it's just a strange mumsnetty blip, and Sylvie won't be one of 15 in her class!

Hedwig3 · 26/07/2011 17:08

Sylvie is a lovely name.

chipmonkey · 17/09/2011 00:55

Just to update, I actually had a girl and have called her Sylvie-Rose. Never say never!Grin
