Is Lyra May a good girls name?

I just spotted Lyra on another thread, and it suddenly reminded me of the Philip Pullman books....and I thought...is that such a crazy name...? We are having difficulties choosing a girls name, (May as the second name is a given, but the first name is causing probs) and in my hormonal state this is seeming quite nice....

what you all think?

I have a 20 month old Lyra Emily and it really suits her, she is such a funny little kid and she calls herself LyLy. Most people are very complementary on her name. No-one has ever said it is horrible to my face! But you can tell if people think it's odd because you get 'Oh...That's unusual'. I've met one other Lyra (on holiday) and seen 2 in magazines so there are at least 4 little Lyra's running around, and they have all been little blond girls. You should definately use it, I'm so glad I did, and I think it's lovelywith Mae/May.

Lyra isn't for me I'm afraid. Have you considered Lyla or Lila / Leela?

As for May as a middle name, I think it is rapidly becoming the 'Louise' of the 90s (my middle name!) but I can't say it's ever done me any harm having such a 'common' middle name for my age group.

Just found out my friends cat is called Lyra so it's put me off a little bit.... might just give up until I know what sex the piglet is...

I don't think it's a 'crazy' name, but don't think it's very nice either (same goes for Myra). Have never met anyone with it in real life, though maybe it's starting to get popular because of those children's books?

I like L names generally - but Leila or Lara would be nicer in my opinion. Or even Laura, though this now feels very dated to me having been so popular when I was young!

Lyra May sounds very good. Don't know any other Lyras either.

Yes but Futurama is somewhat dated now, I don't think it's being made anymore? I also like L names, DS is a Lucas but our shortlist of girl's names included Lydia, Lyla, Leila, Layla, Lola .etc

I don't like it - it's not that easy to pronounce, ie Lie-ra becomes Liar-ra. The point was made in the books that Lyra's name suited her as she was such a good liar.
