Woody, Jonty, Hector - boys name help..

Mrsdp123 · 14/07/2011 22:05

This is my first mumsnet post but I seem to spend most of my time hunting through the names list. Most of the names I like seem to be universally greeted with gasps so whilst I am not asking for them to be liked I wonder if people can offer any names I might not have considered (having read 7 books...) or nicknames/abbreviations I might not have considered for my second child.
I like traditional names but most of our friends children are called Oliver, Charlie, William etc and I don't want something too popular, but I also don't want to go down the "trendy" route and be stuck with a name that becomes very 2011 etc..

Names I like with some concerns:
Edward (but called Woody)
Wilbur/Wilby
Jonty (would it be shortened to Jon which I hate)
Monty
Hector
Rafferty (bit trendy)?
Toby
Boris (we are both blond(e), husband feels we may give birth to Bo-Jo...
Flint (bit odd)?
I really like the name of our first child and don't want to feel that I pick an "ok" name for our second that I end up hating. Thanks...

Mrsdp123 · 14/07/2011 23:35

Lots more to think about thank you! The last few threads I either don't like the shortened version of the names (Like Victor, don't like Vic etc) or again I know children with those names that either we can't use as they are friends or I don't like the child so it has rather put me off.
Am off to look up some of the names in my pile of books though so thank you for all suggestions..
I also had a rummage through some other posts and quite like Atticus which someone had posted although I do wonder if it might rise in popularity with the Beckhams choosing Harper. I just can't do celebrity names (although I know I can't do anything about it if God forbid the Rooneys end up on here pinching my names)!!

Tonier or phineas are a couple more suggestions although I'm digging wilbur-just love it. We know a jonte and he's never known as Jon. Normally jont. Boys names are so hard x

Noleen · 15/07/2011 07:56

I like Toby best but also like Cassius which Lockets recommended.

joydivisionovengloves · 15/07/2011 08:52

Please not Jonty. Please!

razzlebathbone · 15/07/2011 09:22

Anything but Jonty. Worst name ever.

pointydog · 15/07/2011 09:34

Edward because the nn Ed and Eddie are great. Woody's a joke name.

Montgomery (Monty)
Rasmus
Harvey
Erik / Eric
Percival (Percy)
Axel

idlevice · 15/07/2011 12:34

I like Harper for a boy, similar to Archer (Archie) & less likely to get nicknamed Harpy if a boy. Archie goes well with Bertie?

Noleen · 15/07/2011 12:40

No to Baxter and woody.

ShoutyHamster · 15/07/2011 13:09

Hector by far the best

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 15/07/2011 21:12

Yes to Atticus - love it.

tammy234 · 16/07/2011 21:37

I hope you know the meaning of Hector and the verb to hector - it means bully, torment and a hector is a bully, tormentor. Not a good association imo.

Love Atticus, Victor, Quentin, Cassius and Monty though.

messagetoyourudy · 18/07/2011 20:46

I had to post on this even though it is a few days old as the title has 2 of my sons names on it!

I have a Hector and a Woodrow (aka Woody)

both are fab names - just wanted you to know that they are real little boys out there with those names.....

Reluctant2ndtimer · 18/07/2011 21:41

How about Elwood for woody, from the film Harvey, not the blues brothers,
Atticus I love
Elijah
Benedict
Hugo

Noleen · 19/07/2011 07:07

Woody will definitely get teased.
