Woody, Jonty, Hector - boys name help..

Mrsdp123 · 14/07/2011 22:05

This is my first mumsnet post but I seem to spend most of my time hunting through the names list. Most of the names I like seem to be universally greeted with gasps so whilst I am not asking for them to be liked I wonder if people can offer any names I might not have considered (having read 7 books...) or nicknames/abbreviations I might not have considered for my second child.
I like traditional names but most of our friends children are called Oliver, Charlie, William etc and I don't want something too popular, but I also don't want to go down the "trendy" route and be stuck with a name that becomes very 2011 etc..

Names I like with some concerns:
Edward (but called Woody)
Wilbur/Wilby
Jonty (would it be shortened to Jon which I hate)
Monty
Hector
Rafferty (bit trendy)?
Toby
Boris (we are both blond(e), husband feels we may give birth to Bo-Jo...
Flint (bit odd)?
I really like the name of our first child and don't want to feel that I pick an "ok" name for our second that I end up hating. Thanks...

Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

Dashiell

SayItLoud · 14/07/2011 22:26

Basil
Sebastian
Arlo
Theodore

I love Boris, you won't think of BJ when you've named him, it'll become his own name.

MelinaM · 14/07/2011 22:27

Such a fabulous list! ...LOVE Monty!!!

Some more for you:

Balthazar
Baxter
Bramwell
Edmund
Gideon
Humphrey
Magnus
Orson
Ptolemy
Sebastian
Thaddeus
Wilf

WhippedCream · 14/07/2011 22:29

Theo is wonderful

WhippedCream · 14/07/2011 22:29

Wilf is a shade over onto the bonkers side

WhippedCream · 14/07/2011 22:30

Ptolemy is v Jilly Cooper.

He is actually a character in the Vicar's Wife her middle class swotty son.

WhippedCream · 14/07/2011 22:30

Magnus Pear Cider... I'd avoid..

Baxter is ok, he'd like soup...

Mrsdp123 · 14/07/2011 22:31

Gosh lots of suggestions already. I'd only nipped off to eat some Butterkist...
I like Bartholomew but my first son is called Bertie...and I can't have a Bart and a Bert. I liked Tolly for a shortened version of Bartholomew.
I like Henry/Barney/Benji but know friends with them already...Also know a Rex and Finn seems to be really popular at the moment..
I also like Felix but husband keeps shouting "cat" everytime I say it.
Cassius is a bit like our surname - lots of s's...
I like Inigo ( I quite liked Ignatius and Jago but husband again just thinks I'm mad)..
Ralph I liked until again husband kept reminding me of all the things Ralph from the Simpsons says...
Went to school with a Hugo and a Jolyon and this has put me off both names.
I quite like Humphrey though...

Mrsdp123 · 14/07/2011 22:41

I like Wilf but again we know one..All our friends seem to have had boys..I wouldnt have had this problem with a girl!
I like Baxter too. I hadn't associated it with soup. Just the bear at my son's nursery!! and Ptolemy but the child is going to have a surname that no-one can spell and pronounce so I don't feel I can do that with the first name as well.
I also like Sebastian but not Seb and I just know people will shorten it and I like Basil but shudder at the thought of him being known as Baz...

Edward (but called Woody) nice name but may find nickname upto schoolfriends rather than you
Wilbur/Wilby - no - think pig stories
Jonty (would it be shortened to Jon which I hate) - yep
Monty - python?
Hector - 's house (to all mums born in 70's)
Rafferty (bit trendy)? No
Toby - OK (but make sure no dodgy ears in dna or jug jokes appear)
Boris (we are both blond(e), husband feels we may give birth to Bo-Jo... No
Flint (bit odd)? ok

Of the others I like Barney, Michael, Joel, Basil, Sebastian, Jude, also Dominic Japheth, Rupert & Noah

vess · 14/07/2011 22:47

I like Hector the best, then Wilbur and Flint.

And Mortimer instead of Monty.
