Regreting DD2 name :( would you change it?

my DD2 (4mnths) is named Elizabeth, nn Betsy, which I love, but doesn't suite her. It's the name i choose before she was born. My dd1 wanted to call her Kitty and it suits her down to a T! But I told her no as her name is Tabitha and didn't want to sound like a mad cat lady! But sooo wished I listened to her :(
I know legally I can change it, but my mum said I can't as I've told everyone her name now.
And I have form, so to speak! Lol, dd1 was named something I reluctantly too, but I couldn't live with it, so I changed it by deed poll, and I'm glad I did! She is a Tabitha!
Wwyd?

Go with your instincts. 4 months is so young, no one will remember in a couple of years what her orginal name was.

I have friends who have recently changed the name of their six month old. She is already very easily her new name. And her parents had good reason.. Within a month of her birth a car company had named a new car with her name!

And even with DS, who is now eleven. I still regret mightily not having held out for the name I wanted. which would have s suited him so well!

I'm not sure what I would do tbh. I really don't think Tabitha and Kitty go well as the first thing I thought of was cats. However, if you really like kitty then I think it isn't too late to change her name.

I don't think Kitty and Betsy are that different really, similar sound/type. Kitty and Tabitha aren't good together. Elizabeth is a great name

manicinsomniac · 11/07/2011 01:06

I don't think you can have a Kitty with a Tabitha. They'll be known as Tabby and Kitty.

I have a Rex, a Felix and 2 Kittys in my class at school - all okay alone but together ... I feel like I'm running a petshop not teaching a class of kids!!

Sounds like you have everyone telling you, your daughter, your mum, but at the end of the day it's your choice.

You asked us so we are now chipping in. Lots of people have said lots of common sense here. I agree that if you really want to change it then you should but I would just think a bit more about it before you make the move.

I agree that Elizabeth is a lovely, pretty and very versatile name. I would say the most versatile, so many possible nicknames for her to choose when she is older and for you to choose now, her nick name does not need to be set in stone. She could be Betsy or Lizzie. I love Betty.

Kitty is OK but I think it does make me think of cats and so does Tabitha a bit so agree that together not so good as her official name but ideal for her sister to call her that.

The trouble with Kitty (IMHO) is that if she does not like it she can't change it, or she can but that would be more confusing - and Elizabeth has so many nicknames.

Agree with whoever said Kizzy, sounds like Lizzy (which is short for Elizabeth) but keeps the Kitty sound your older daughter likes.

Having had a baby and with another at home you might be tired/hormonal so do think carefully before you make the decision.

At the end of the day, your choice for now but be aware she might end up using her own nickname anyway, and she will probably grow into her name as time goes on.

Thanks for all your opinions, yes, I love Elizabeth too, it's a family name too, about 8 generation's now! And it flows with my other childens names, Tabitha, Tobias and Elizabeth! So thanks for restoring my faith in the name! Am going to let my daughter call her Kitty as there special nn, yep, she is a Tabby to all but me! Fellow manic well dd1 wanted ds to be a Felix too! Could you imagine! Funny thing is our pets have human names! We have 3 cats - sky, saffy and Lola and there was a ruby! Think I've got it all a bit back to front! [grins] I also regret my ds name, so wanted him to be a Humphrey, but was vetoed :( he is soooo a Humph :)

Betsy, Beth, Lizzie, Libby, all lovely names.
Use Kitty as a nickname if you like.

Blu · 11/07/2011 13:14

Or if you actually no longer like the name choose a completely new name - Kitty with tabitha is a leeeeetle bit much!

lovenest · 11/07/2011 20:28

How about Katherine, then you could nn her Kitty. You do get 12 months to amend a name on the birth cert. Elizabeth is a fab name though! Love all the options, beth, Eliza, Betsy etc etc

muminthemiddle · 11/07/2011 23:06

I think after reading your last post I would leave her name as it is. Do you seriously regret calling your ds Tobias and not Humphrey???!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Wow Tobias is lovely, Humphrey-well what can I say.
Don't do anything rash whatever you decide.

Cristiane · 11/07/2011 23:13

I changed my dd2's name at four months.

I can't imagine now ever calling her her original name, she didn't suit it

Everyone was a bit funny for about five minutes and to be honest i think hardly anyone remembers her first name! She is 2 now

Sn0wGoose · 12/07/2011 10:56

Kitty is short for Catherine -- so if you called her Catherine and Kitty for short, it's not like she'd get stuck with a rediculous name when she's older; she could choose.

diddl · 12/07/2011 18:10

Elizabeth is lovely.

And of course Kitty suits more than Betsy-she´s a baby!

minipie · 12/07/2011 18:32

Does your DD have a middle name you could make into Kitty?

kalo12 · 12/07/2011 21:19

i love elizabeth - i would call her Betty Kitten as a nickname

my daughter got the wrong name, it was the one i'd wanted but it didnt suit her. i cried about it for months and put some serious thought into changing it. i couldnt though, i couldnt face telling everyone, family, GP, HV blah blah. they'd all think i was mad, i wasn't really sure what i'd change it to, and i didnt want people to be thinking 'ffs, preferred the old name!' forever. but, now she's almost 2 i no longer worry about it, she's grown into her name, because it's hers. just give her a nn Kitty. i think your concerns about the mad cat lady are well founded, sorry! Elizabeth is versatile, there's so many diminutives she can choose, or you can choose. i happen to think Betsy is a fantastic nn.
