Bernard? Completely bonkers or pleasingly retro?

I love it and so does dh.

What do you think? Would it go with a 'posh' double barrelled surname....

When DD1's friends ask me my name I always say Bernard. In fact it is my comedy name of choice for any sort of situation. And it's Nursie's name.

Trinaluce · 07/07/2011 21:34

tammy Shock Are you British? How can you not know who Blackadder is?!

I'm afraid Bernard does scream Blackadder for me too - not that that's any bad thing, I love Edmund but DH said no Sad Only wouldn't use Bernard myself as that's what we call my mum (Richard Curtis has a lot to answer for!)

bluebump · 07/07/2011 21:35

There is a Bernard at one of the baby groups I go to.

Georgimama · 07/07/2011 21:38

Your son will get eaten by the monster at the end of the garden. Don't do it.

Plus the whole Nursie thing (revenge by Richard Curtis on Bernard Jenkins for "stealing" his girlfriend).

Trinaluce · 07/07/2011 21:44

Georgi REALLY? I love that! That's excellent Grin

Georgimama · 07/07/2011 21:48

Yes, absolutely true old article here

meditrina · 07/07/2011 21:53

And Bernard was Sir Humphrey's underling in Yes Minster (a programme which should be repeated, prime time, in the 6 ms before every general election).

So perhaps it should be a name honoured for being at the heart of British comedy?

smartyparts · 07/07/2011 21:55

Bernard is a nerd's name, he is about 48 and lives with his mum

Trinaluce · 07/07/2011 21:58

Yes Minister (and Prime Minister) was played A LOT on Watch/Gold (one of the two) in the run up to the last election. Made it very difficult to take any of it seriously Wink

On that note, I love the name Humphrey too :)

Georgimama · 07/07/2011 22:04

The Blackadder series 3 election episode is an absolute classic on the workings of democracy too:

"I smeared my opponents, bribed the electorate, I don't see what more a reasonable politician could have done" and the classic "we paid for this seat, and it's a damned cheek we should have to fight for it as well".

Trinaluce · 07/07/2011 22:10

Plebs at the bottom, toffs at the top, and me in the middle making a fat pile of cash out of both of them Grin

Georgimama · 07/07/2011 22:17

"ooh, it's real cat!"

doggus · 08/07/2011 00:48

I'd bloody forgotten about Blackadder. You've RUINED it now!! Stamps foot and sulks.

I think of 4 weddings and a funeral when Lydia is bridesmaid and is disappointed by the lack of sex, and ends up snogging Bernard, coming up for air and saying 'BERNARD!' and then more snogging.

hightrees · 08/07/2011 19:32

But what about that gorgeous Bernard Butler in the Verve? That's who I think of. Cool name, OP.

hulabula · 08/07/2011 21:58

I like Bernard. Classic and cool. And not overused as so many others. Bernie is a cute nickname.

CandiceMariePratt · 08/07/2011 22:01

I really like it, Bernie is cute

PorkChopSter · 08/07/2011 22:06

I'd do it just so I could say "not now Bernard" Blush

JulyOrAugustThatIsTheQuestion · 08/07/2011 22:07

Me likey!!! :)

borderslass · 08/07/2011 22:10

God please don't my brother is a Bernard and is the biggest idiot to walk the planet.

Camerondiazepam · 08/07/2011 22:13

Bernard Butler was in Suede, and possibly the coolest Bernard of recent years.

stleger · 08/07/2011 22:30

Dh has a relation called Bernard, who is known as Barney. I only know that he is called Bernard because someone else named a baby after him.

hightrees · 09/07/2011 10:06

Oh yeh Cameron - why did I think the Verve? Now what was he called? That's the name you want OP. It's fate. Off to google.

hightrees · 09/07/2011 10:06

Hmmm, Richard. OK, maybe not.
