As a middle name?
I don't love the name but it is a family members name who I would love to name my dd after.
What do we think?

I still tend to think "Duckworth", but think it'd be fine in the middle.

razzlebathbone · 03/07/2011 11:51

I think the only thing really tainting it is the Duckworth connection. But that won't be a problem for future generations, so yeah go for it!

fastweb · 03/07/2011 12:02

If you aren't that keen on it as a name how about one that carries the same meaning (Truth), like Verity.

That way you can honor the person with a name for you child that perhaps you do like a little better.

Dh was desperate to honor his father by naming our son after him. Trouble is that Franco just didn't do it for me, so we plumped for Francesco as the official name and Frankie as the nickname. FIL was utterly delighted despite the tweaking.

On the other hand some people just aren't happy unless it is totally the same.

MIL was determined to be similarly honored (via the steamroller approach) and was most put out when we had the cheek to use the masculine version of her name rather than the feminine version she is called.

I think Vera is lovely. I would use it as a first name, but lovely in mn too.

I like Vera. I've works with lots of old ladies and all the Veras have been utter treasures :)

moshchops · 03/07/2011 13:14

I am odd, I wouldn't be able to call my child Vera, I would have to call the lass Veronica and shorten it to Vera. Yes, even for a middle name.

MelinaM · 03/07/2011 13:20

Vera is awful, how about Vita? ...a lovely elegant nameSmile

LetThereBeRock · 03/07/2011 13:37

As a middle name yes,if it's a family name,definitely not as a first name.

allhailtheaubergine · 03/07/2011 13:45

I like Vera.

I would never have thought Duckworth.

GRW · 03/07/2011 17:47

I think it's a lovely name that should come back. It reminds me of Vera Brittain who wrote Testament of Youth.

CaptainBizarro · 04/07/2011 02:52

If the OP wants to use the name specifically to honour someone, then suggesting alternatives seems to me a weird thing to do.

I get maybe using a different name which has the same meaning (just), but a totally different name which just happens to share the first letter? What would be the point of that?! Confused Grin

lizzieloubee1 · 04/07/2011 09:48

I like it :) I also like (love, in fact) Verity

pilates · 04/07/2011 09:54

as a middle name, (and if the family person was very special) yes but def not as a first.

SloganLogan · 04/07/2011 10:45

Not to my taste, sorry.

Hedwig3 · 04/07/2011 11:01

Great name with a bit of oomph in my opinion!

IslaValargeone · 04/07/2011 11:06

Well I think Vera Farmiga rather than Duckworth, I rather like it as she is so gorgeous.

sparkle12mar08 · 04/07/2011 11:13

Awful, even as a middle name. Vita on the other hand is beautiful - good call MelinaM!

otchayaniye · 05/07/2011 13:48

I like Vera, but then I've lived in Russia and speak Russian and it's an elegant name there and doesn't have the baggage it has here

HamsterMamster · 07/07/2011 08:35

I quite like Vera.
If anything it makes me think 'Wang' rather than Duckworth (but then I never watched corrie or whatever she was in!)

mayanna123 · 07/07/2011 11:47

I like Vera. Classic, beautiful and not overused.

Ephiny · 07/07/2011 22:11

Don't like it, it seems very dated and old-lady-ish to me, and I just don't like the sound or look of it somehow.

Verity is lovely though.

I love it. Absolutely love it.

Though I do think of Aloe Vera (hallo Vera).

doggus · 08/07/2011 00:51

Oooh and Vita and Verity are gorgeous too.
