Girl's name dilema help

Decided not to let on to anyone our name choices but am now feeling a bit paranoid and can't ask for any opinions except here!!
I think we are fairly happy with Jacob Roger for a boy and we like Amelia Rose for a girl. Trouble is I am worried that Amelia is too common now and that it will get abreviated to Amy (SIL's name), don't especially like Milly either.
Am I overthinking it??

The only Amelia I know is 7 or 8 now if it helps.

Amelia was at number 9 on popularity chart for 2009 (and if you add the Emilias, which is pronounced almost identically that puts it even higher). There are at least 2 in my daughter's nursery, one in a group we attend (and an Amelie) and it does seem to be one of the more common names we encounter out and about. So yes, if you are worried about popularity choose something else but if you love the name regardless it doesn't matter.

Jacob is lovely btw.

Oh, never heard it abbreviated to Amy, mostly Milly. Know of one adult abbreviated to Mimi which is nice and has a bit more attitude than Millie.

I love Millie but I have an irrational dislike of the name Amelia. For me its such a nothing name.

I do know a few Amelia's, most of whom are shortened to Millie, but one is Mia and one is Mimi.

I know of 6 Amelia's /Emelia's all under the age of 5, it's been popular for a few years and I think it will continue to be for a fair few more. The little girls I know are abbreviated to Millie/y or Em/Emmy, neither of which are particularly nice.

How about Amulet or Aurelia?

Hi - I love both Amelia Rose (so pretty!) and Jacob Roger.

Although Amelia was at number 9 in 2009 figures, it only means just over 1% of all the girls born that year in England/Wales were called that so fingers crossed there won't be 8 in every class. I too have been trying to avoid names that are too common popular, but when you look at the actual numbers of babies born each year, it is a little more reassuring.

I would also back up plonker and olddeuteronomy's suggestion of Mimi as a nn - as I think that is lovely too.

It's shortened to Amy on Doctor Who, so I bet that abbreviation is becoming more popular in playgrounds.

You could go Peabody-ish and shorten to Lia.

Thanks guys, feeling much happier. Love the idea of Mia, really pretty and a bit more unusual. So wanted to find a way to stick with Amelia and that works for me :)

it may be a locality thing with names but there are a handful of Amelias amongst my friends/colleagues. 4 alltogether and they are all in the 3-4 age group

Ive got a Romilly which never gets shortened to Millie. The only Amelia i know is 8

I would think it is quite strange to shorten Amelia to Amy as that's a different name entirely.

Personally, I would shorten Amelia to "Meelie". Not that I am a shortener of names without permission!

Nothing really MS we call her Roms but no one else does. I also like Romile and Romy. Mines 7 and i have never met another one in RL.

I worked with a Romilly in the late nineties (she would now be in her early thirties) and have loved the name ever since.

I love Ethne but couldnt use it on any of my DD's . I like names which are not very popular

I don't know many Amelias. My friend has one and they call her Millie but every one else calls her Amelia.

My goddaughter is an Amelia and she's shortened to Lia.

I know loads of Amelia's who are all under 5!

All the Amelias I know don't get their name shortened to anything. They are all just Amelia.
