He is seven months now. When I told her his name she said "oh. you don't mind him being bullied when he's older then" Shock.

His name is Alessandro.

They're right about Delilah, though. Everyone breaks out into "Patricia the Stripper" when they meet me :o

Seriously though, it will happen a lot. You just learn to smile politely, it's no biggie.

Agree that she mustn't get out much, afterall who is going to invite out a complete bitch like that. At least she was a stranger though, when we told my Mum what we had named DD she looked like she was sucking a lemon when she said "well I suppose you can't choose what they call your grandchildren".

Its a lovely name, ignore her and enjoy your baby.

ChunkyPickle · 12/06/2011 17:31

It's a lovely name, and as everyone else says kids these days will grow up around far more unusual names.

When I told my family what we'd called my son, my sister responded with 'you know you're supposed to love him don't you?'

Strangers have been much more polite though :)

lilaloves · 12/06/2011 19:06

Thats one of my fav names ever, unfortunate that we have no italian/spanish heritage or would have used it.

proudfoot · 12/06/2011 19:22

Some people have no manners. Alessandro is a lovely name and even if it is not to her taste, she shouldn't make such a comment.

Superfly · 12/06/2011 21:19

You should have told her to eff off

BelleEnd · 12/06/2011 21:38

When an old lady asked what my DS2was called, I told her. She shook her head and said, "Well, never mind." Cheeky cow.
It's a traditional Welsh name, by the way... And we are in deepest Wales!

Lovely name OP. And have no idea how he is going to be bullied because of his name! Don't worry about it, really.

thefirstMrsDeVere · 12/06/2011 21:43

Alessandro is a lovely name!

I get the 'oh' reaction all the time with my kids's names.

Bothers me not.

thefirstMrsDeVere · 12/06/2011 21:44

Almost all of my OH's family actually insist that my DS is called RUBY.

He isnt. Hmm

Bit off topic I know but I cba to start a whole new thread about it Grin

heavenstobetsy · 12/06/2011 21:45

My dp's uncle was very rude about my DS's name and I was quite speechless at the time (which is almost unheard of for me Grin)

I did get quite upset about it afterwards - right up to the point when I remembered he had called his son Wayne and so actually I didn't give two sh*ts for his opinion on names!

With apologies to any Waynes, my point is as long as YOU like it, who cares what the rude tossers think

FunnysInTheGarden · 12/06/2011 21:45

Don't worry at all, his name is lovely. My DC names are Fabian and Raphael (Rafe for short) and we get loads of 'Oh' reactions. Nothing outright rude, just that you cane see a lot of folk think WTF!
I don't care, and neither should you. I love my DC's names and that is really all that matters. Fabian has been at school now for a year and as far as I know, no one has commented on his name, far less bullied him.

BelleEnd · 12/06/2011 21:47

Oooooh funny, what lovely names!

ithaka · 12/06/2011 21:49

I remember telling a colleague my new daughter's name and she pulled a face and said: 'why did you call her that?' I just replied 'because I like it' (well, obv) and walked away - but I was seething.

electra · 12/06/2011 21:50

Alessandro is a lovely name. Shes ignorant, rude and not worth giving another thought!

bemybebe · 12/06/2011 21:53

Why bullied?? Stupid comment. Alessandro is a great name. One of my favourites in fact. Smile

PurpleStrawberry · 12/06/2011 21:56

OP - my children all have Hispanic names and we get that too.

These people don't realise there is life beyond English names!

TeddyMcardle · 12/06/2011 21:57

I like it.
Very rarely do I get a positive reaction to ds's name, people usually just say:
What?
What?
Hows that spelt?
Oh.

Can't get angry with idiots anymore, I consider it a twat filter as all the nice interesting people either say that's nice, or is it Irish? And I kiss them Grin

FunnysInTheGarden · 12/06/2011 21:59

why thank you Belle [coy]

FunnysInTheGarden · 12/06/2011 22:02

aye Teddy re nice and interesting people. I deffo judge folk on their reaction to my DC's names. If anyone says "oh", I think 'fool' and if anyone says how lovely etc, I put them on my Christmas Card list Grin

EvilTwins · 12/06/2011 22:03

People are stupid.

A friend's mother enquired after another mutal friend, who had just had a baby. She asked the name, I told her (Lily). "Oh, ", says mother, "What a shame. It's flower names, you see, they always sound awful." She knows FULL WELL that DTD1's name is Daisy. Angry Stupid old trout.

thursday · 12/06/2011 22:05

mister wouldn't let me call our daughter Delilah, for which i'm still bitter. there's also a queen song Delilah about a cat.

re OP: yes that was rude and unnecessary. a simple 'how unusual!' gets your point across without actually spelling it out. i get a lot of 'how unusual!'s about my son. the registrar made a snarky comment about my daughter when we registered her.

PurpleStrawberry · 12/06/2011 22:07

FunnysInTheGarden - one of mine is Rafael (the Spanish spelling), a great name!
