PP?

Our surname begins with a P, two syllables, we're not expecting yet but were discussing names and both love Penny.

Is that ridiculous with a P surname? I am generally a fan of aliteration in names but wondered if PP is too much or a bit open to teasing?

What do you think?

I just thought PP = peepee. Like wee. Maybe I just have a very childish mind!

ANY name or name combination can me made fun of with a bit of imagination. Choose the name you love and give your child a lot of confidence and sense of humour. I love aliterations (and was a BB until I married).

Yes, but some names don;t need any imagination at all to be mockable. nd the sort of person who makes fun of people's names is unlikely to have much imagination - so why hand them an opportunity on a plate?

And if you really think that just because you love a name it's OK to use it dispite any potential teasing so long as you give your daughter a "sense of humour" - words fail me.

Lots of commonly used names are very easily teasable e.g. William -> Willy or Benedict -> Bendy Dick or Ellie -> Smellie Ellie etc etc etc. People still use these names.
And yes I do think we need to teach our children to be confident and feel proud of their heritage, their name and who they are.

Just avoid any middle name starting with a vowel. Well, PUP might be quite sweet...

Really interesting question that has got me thinking... I generally love a good aliteration (and have a bit of a theory that many successful people have names like this - Marilyn Monroe, Sylvester Stallone, Susan Sarandon, William Wordsworth, Doris Day, Greta Garbo, Charlie Chaplin etc etc).

I hadn't thought about the PP thing before, but as I think about it I have rarely heard a persons initials being brought up before (unless they spell something unfortunate). Parker Posey, Pablo Picasso, Penelope Pitstop (OK sorry about that one!)...

I think the initials PP would be fine, but if you are worried you can use a middle name with a different initial.

But presumably nobody in their right mind would call their child William with the intention of using Willy as a nickname? Or Richard - intending to call him Little Dick?

Honestly - there's going to be enough adversity in every child's life to build their character without giving them a name that will make people snigger just because their mother loved it?

Of course the parents of William are not intending their child to be called Willy just like the OP is not intending to call her child Peepee... but a lot of names are easily teasable and we still use the names because we love them despite the teasing potential.

I would avoid it.............. Sorry.

Actually, I have changed my mind, because when you say your initials you usually include the one in the middle. I always think of my initials as a 3 letter combo, not a two letter combo. The alliteration is nice. A good thing. I like that. PP as in pee pee is not good, but just make sure the middle initial is not a, as in a smear test. oh god that reminds me, i'm due one.

Thanks ladies. Will keep thinking about it, DH loves the name (and the name Polly as well) but thinks that an aliterative name is a bit silly but good to hear that lots of people like them!

MsChanandlerBong - I like lots of F names, what kind of name do you like? How about Freya, Faye, Felix or Frederick? I also know a baby girl called Fairy...

Oooh, wait, what about Serafina? Not strictly aliterative but Serafina Finch (for example) is lovely!

I don't think alliterative names are a bad thing in themselves, but certain letters and names lend themselves to sounding a little bit sillier than others. In my opinion these are B, D and P. So depending on the name, I proabbly wouldn't!

Pedigree, I loved being a B.B., like Brigitte Bardot .

Thanks glittershoes - we're having a girl, but unfortunately our surname has lots of vowels so Freya and Faye sound daft (annoyingly!). But I LOVE the idea of Serafina... that actually works really well with our surname!

I don't remember the last time I was referred to by my initials! I also agree that most names can be made fun of in a playground so please don't worry to much about what people say. Besides - even the most normal name can become infamous - ask anyone called Fred West.

I think PP is cool. A bit like Posie Parker.

DS is PP Surname.
No probs so far, but he is only 2.8.

It crossed my mind that this might be a problem, but I dismissed it. IF it is, he'll just have to learn to man up. I think if a child is going to be teased, then the bullies will find anything about them to tease about. DS has reddish hair too, but there was nought I could do about that (my genes!) and I'm not going to dye it when he goes to school.

Dexi - thanks for the suggestion - unfortunately my Mum is called Felicity and HATES it! (Although I quite like it to be honest!). I'm not keen on my dd's grandmother screwing her face up everytime she refers to her grand daughter by name. I'm afraid she wouldn't see it as an honour, she would see it as an affliction!
