I've been resisting asking for other people's opinions but now am desperate!

We've got to decide soon ...

Our shortlist is:

Dora
Hester
Iris
Rosa
Rhona
Mabel

Please could you let me know what your opinions are.

Thank you x

Rosa or Iris

Really don't like Hester very snake like.

puzzletree · 07/06/2011 13:07

Iris or Rosa

EllieG:-

This is the difficulty I/we are having.

She doesn't look petite and delicate. She weighed 9 pounds and 2 oz when she was born and is now over 11 pounds I reckon.

She kind of looks beautiful (of course I would think so) in a no nonsense kind of hard way. So I keep calling her Hester in my head and sometimes Rosa (because that name sounds kind of round).

I really really love the name Iris, but it seems a bit too delicate for her. And then I get cross with myself because I think she won't always look the way that she does now and may well turn out to be delicate. I think I'm graceful and a bit delicate.

I think she mostly seems like a Hester - and we decided on that properly for about a week - but a lot of people's reactions made me think it was a bad idea ... I'm not sure whether I really like the name either.

call her Hester. She will be tall and graceful and beautiful - you know you want to

It oozes class

Capiche · 07/06/2011 22:10

my kids names always make people fall silent - i get used to it- so do they...then a year on people go ' I REALLY love * 's name but i wasn't sure at first'

skewiff · 07/06/2011 22:14

Thankyou everyone by the way.

I read EllieG's reply first and immediately responded to it. And now I've just read everyone else's and they've really cheered me up.

Its awful to be feeling anything other than cheerful about having such a beautiful little girl - but this name thing is really doing my head in.

You've all helped a lot though. Thank you.

Hester is a fantastic name. It's very near the top of my shortlist for my not-yet-conceived-2nd-daughter. I also love Mabel but once had a VW campervan called Mabel so have difficultly imagining something with a pulse with the name.

Hester has real stength but isn't 'hard' imo. Go for Hester. :)

MmeLindor. · 07/06/2011 22:24

Hester is a fab name.

I wish the Granny names had been popular when DD was born, so that I could have called her Beatrice or Daphne.

The dog is called Daphne now.

squeak2392 · 07/06/2011 22:25

Hester sounds like a boy to me - but I absolutely love Hestia!! Use Hestia ;) It's pretty in a no-nonsense way, just like her :)

Good luck!!

ResurrectionByChocolate · 07/06/2011 22:40

I like Iris best, but think of "I. Surname", and potential problems there (I read recently about Barb Dwyer... )

wudu · 07/06/2011 22:44

I like Rosa best, then Iris.

These two are a clear mile ahead of the others.

Esther is prettier than Hester.

IMO

Cathycat · 07/06/2011 22:48

I have never heard of Hester and think Esther is quite nice too. But Rosa is lovely. Far nicer. Anyway it is you who needs to choose it lol!

LadyGoneGaga · 08/06/2011 10:57

Iris or Rosa. We are going for Iris if DC2 is a girl. But Rosa also very pretty.

Just because she's chunky now, she may not be late. DS was quite a big, chunky baby early on but by a year he was tall and slim. And still is at 3.

suwoo · 08/06/2011 11:03

Hester.

My DD was a massive chunk and had those big cheeks and looked like she might grow up to be similar. She is tiny. Aged 9 she wears age 5 clothes, she is tall just super skinny and very graceful. So don't base your decision on her appearance now. All children grow into their names.

Iris is on the rise and will be the next Ava, IMO.

oohlaalaa · 08/06/2011 11:34

I like Rosa best.

Renaissance227 · 08/06/2011 11:35

Rosa or Iris.
I like Ruby or Lily x

messylittlemonkey · 08/06/2011 11:38

Like all except Rhona and not so keen on Hester.

Faves are Mabel, Iris and Rosa.

Congratulations BTW!

telsa · 08/06/2011 12:36

I love Hester - Hettie is such a nice nickname too. Rosa is so so pretty - but it has a great strong woman (Rosa Luxemburg) associated with it.

Iris - no, too eyebally, and harsh and fey at the same time.

Rhona - is pretty and I think Mabel is wonderful!
I'd go for Hester, nn Hettie. And if not that Mabel.

vess · 08/06/2011 14:49

Like Dora and Iris.

radancer · 08/06/2011 18:53

Go for a name you really really like. I think if you're not sure you like the name now the chances are you'll dislike it in ten years.

Bicnod · 08/06/2011 18:56

Hester is my number 1 girls name if my bump turns out to be pink

skewiff · 08/06/2011 22:19

Ok I'm more into Hester today. I think I just needed to get my confidence back with it, after some negative silent responses.

How do you pronounce Hestia?

OP posts:
Capiche · 08/06/2011 23:11

stick with Hester! Hestia is the name of my bra!

CristinaTheAstonishing · 08/06/2011 23:21

How about Esther? Sounds like Hester but a bit more conventional and feminine.
