This is at the top of our list and has been all the way through, but are the connotations of the name not right for a girl baby? Also, is Lola a good abbreviation?

Love love love it

Lola is fine, but Lorelai/Lorelei is so pretty I'd stick with the full name?

GetDownYouWillFall · 05/06/2011 20:46

Hmmm I'm not sure - "luring sailors to shipwreck and death" is mentioned on the meanings websites.

MetalSian · 05/06/2011 20:49

My cousins child is called Lorelai, shortened to Lolli.
Lovely name =].

sevenhamstershopping · 05/06/2011 20:51

I thought it meant 'enchanting' which I think could be read in a number of ways.........and obviously you will be enchanted with your lovely baby girl, so it could be quite fitting

franbella5 · 05/06/2011 21:09

Thank you for your opinions =)

I've read that originally it was a lot like the Echo myth, so she wasn't luring sailors, but then this later story has taken hold, so I'm worried she'll be thought of as a man-eater, but I think the name is so pretty!

Does anyone think it would be shortened to lori or laura by many people?

The other two names for a girl are Sophia and Mathilda, but I think daddy-to-be is sole on lorelai now and it's just me worrying!

I love Lorelei. Which is hypocrite as I don't like Persephone because of the connotations...

sevenhamstershopping · 05/06/2011 21:18

Matilda is lovely also

Re:nicknames, I have a name that has lots of nickname potential but as a child decided that I just wanted to be xxx - so if anyone called me a shortened version I just said, "I don't like nicknames" - easy as that.
FWIW I actually think Lori is pretty sweet, as far as nicknames go

ginmakesitallok · 05/06/2011 21:19

I don't like Lorelei - simply because it will always remind me of that country singer Homer had an affair with - poor Marge...

BikeRunSki · 05/06/2011 21:20

Love Lorelei!
20 wk scan tomorrow with DC2, so I get to find out whether to put it on my list or not!

ginmakesitallok · 05/06/2011 21:22

apologies - that brazen hussy was lurleen, so I like Lorelei now (hey it's a lady's perogative to change her mind..)

BikeRunSki · 05/06/2011 21:28

Legend of the Lorelei - originally the name for a cliff on a treacherous bend in the Rhine. Love song too.

Aonach · 05/06/2011 21:29

I like it. Also name of a lovely new fleetfoxes song.

Boogiemumma · 06/06/2011 09:40

Beautiful name love it

hulabula · 06/06/2011 09:42

It is a rock on the river Rhine - I've been passed it too many times to associate it with anything else, I'm afraid.

rednblack · 06/06/2011 12:30

It's a lovely name. Makes me immediately think of the Gilmore Girls tv show too (in the show the mother and daughter are both named Lorelai, but the daughter's name is shortened to Rory).

Nice Cocteau Twins song called Lorelai too.

kreecherlivesupstairs · 06/06/2011 13:29

Sounds like shampoo to me.

hellokitty123 · 06/06/2011 13:51

Sounds very kitshy/American too me. Really don't like it, I'm afraid.

popsicle1984 · 06/06/2011 14:27

Yeah reminds me of the Gilmore Girls too! Soooo annoying! The younger one is such a terrible actress! But it's not that well known over here.

amberleaf · 10/06/2011 23:36

I thought of the Gilmore girls too!

I quite like it but its a mouthful.

MelinaM · 10/06/2011 23:44

Lorelai is lovely ...yes another Gilmore fan here!

MmeLindor. · 10/06/2011 23:47

Terribly kitsch.

My German husband snorted with laughter when I mentioned lorelei as a girls name. Either rock in the Rhein or hussy who lured sailors to their death.

Schiller, wasnt it?

MelinaM · 10/06/2011 23:53

^love itGrin

MmeLindor. · 10/06/2011 23:54

Oh. No. Heine not Schiller.

All German school children learn the poem according to dh

emeraldislander · 11/06/2011 13:23

love Lorelai, LOVED the TV show.

CelebratedMonkey · 11/06/2011 14:04

Gilmore! Also a fan of the show and the name (and would consider it as a name if I ever had a daughter as a result).
