Amelie - lovely but a bit too popular
Annabel - works on younger child but not a teenager or adult imo

Bonnie - no, just no!
Eliza - really like this at the moment
Elodie - not pretty at all and too try hard
Imogen - as above
Jemima - blah
Lydia - Pretty
Matilda - strong but feminine at the same time. my favourite on your list
Ophelia - nice but can't imagine a baby Ophelia

Amelie - A bit silly if you're not french, but pretty.
Annabel - ok but a bit boring
Betsy - I don't really like it, unless she's called Elizabeth and it's a nick name
Bonnie - not keen, reminds me of the blue peter dog (but that's just my age!)
Eliza - Love it
Elodie - Love it
Imogen - Really like it
Jemima - Love it, this would be my fave
Lydia - very pretty but I'd prefer it as a middle name
Matilda - Really like it
Ophelia - Like it but I wouldn't use it (tragic connotations etc)
Ottilie - not keen
Tahlia - not keen
Violet - Like it (probably as a middle name)

In my defence, I was born, have lived in France and teach French so felt justified in using the name Amélie (although most people drop the accent). She was going to be Emily, but just didn't look like an Emily when she was born Hmm.

Amelie - dullsville and prissy and daft if you're British
Annabel - lovely
Betsy - silly, Enid Blyton, Elizabeth is the proper name
Bonnie - I like this a lot
Eliza - lovely
Elodie - lovely but a bit daft if you have no french connection
Imogen - a bit aspirational, and too popular
Jemima - yuk
Lydia - vile on every level
Matilda - boring, reminds me of doormats
Ophelia - aspirational and ugly and makes me think of suicide
Ottilie - grim grim grim - podgy spoilt 1920s schoolgirl
Tahlia - that isn't a name. It's from Bab5 and it's misspelt
Violet - lovely

Dolcegusto · 17/05/2011 18:57

Amelie - too cutesy
Annabel - nice but quite popular
Betsy - not bad
Bonnie - no

Just remember - you did ask!!

Amelie - Nope - pretentious unless you are actually French/living in France.
Annabel - Nope - Annabel Karmel, doll & over used.
Betsy - Nope - old lady or dog
Bonnie - Nope, it's a description not a name (to me, I mean I know it is a name)
Eliza - Dolittle - nope.
Elodie - Nope - always sounds like it should be Melodie
Imogen - by far the best on your list :)
Jemima - Puddleduck - nope
Lydia - Nope - dated.
Matilda - Nope - naughty little girl from the film.
Ophelia - Just nooooooo
Ottilie - Noooooo ottilie awful

Violet - Nope - little old lady and Violent Violet

See - that shortened that down nicely Grin

sarahfreck · 17/05/2011 19:08

Tahlia and Thalia

Erm... aren't these likely to be misheard/mispronounced as "failure", especially in parts of the country where th is often pronounced as f?

Could be setting your dd up for a lot of annoying and unkind jokes in the future?

ChippingIn · 17/05/2011 19:11

I have just read some of the other replies - I honestly don't know how anyone thinks this helps!!! Grin

SwedishEdith · 17/05/2011 19:17

But it's such fun! Grin

HubbaHubbaBubba · 17/05/2011 19:39

lol - it's a good job we're all so thick skinned on MN, eh?! :o

Brices · 17/05/2011 19:46

I'd never heard of Ottilie before, very taken think its beautiful!

KittyBigglesworth · 18/05/2011 10:34

No to Tahlia - it will make many think of NDubz.
I like Matilda and Ottilie.
Betsey reminds me of a character Miriam Margoyles would play.
Amelie - no, it's almost a caricature of wanting to be French. I prefer Amelia.
Imogen - pleasant just a shame about the current Imogen in the news, it will probably blow (ha!) over and she will sink into obscurity.
Violet - interesting one. It's just a matter of time before this is used by a matriach character in Eastenders - it was the name of the Krays' mother after all however also used by the Bonham Carters etc so it could go either way.
Don't have any objections to Lydia.
Annabel is a little sickly.
Bonnie could be done if you are bringing her up in a Shoreditch/Spitalfields environs, i.e you are 'East End cool' with an artistic job. Otherwise, no.

Neutral about the other names.
