Nicknames for Gabriel that aren't "Gabe"!

Further to my post yesterday:

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/baby_names/1213006-Still-stuck-between-two-names-and-now-two-weeks-old-Help?pg=1

Thank you very much everyone for your ideas! I actually added up the "definite Raphael"s and "definite Gabriel"s just as a matter of interest (the online equivalent of tossing a coin maybe) and it was 8 - 8 each. Argh!!

Anyway, given I do like Gabriel, I just have a problem with the nickname "Gabe" - so I said to DH if we can come up with a better nickname, we'll go with Gabriel Flynn.

Obviously when he's older we have a lot less control over who calls him what, but if he has an established nickname when he's younger maybe it'll make the difference. And besides, I don't have to call him "Gabe" unless he demands it of me and if that's the case I'll deal with it as it'll be his wish.

So what other nicknames are there/could we get away with? Somebody suggested Gabe pronounced "Gay-bee" which isn't too bad, but I wondered how realistically we could get away with say "Eli" (and if so, how would it be pronounced?) Would "El-lee" sound too feminine? Or indeed any other variants?

Thanks!! Almost there Grin - you've all been great!!

When I was in school people called me gabs so maybe that or just gab?

sweetnosugar · 02/06/2020 21:04

When children get to school age majority of the time they will end up with a nn, it just happens organically! I’ve taught Gabriel’s they have had the nn Gabe. I’ve grown up with Gabriel’s, their nn’s vary Gabe, Gay, Gaby, G.
I’d say if you only want your child to be called Gabriel, I would avoid choosing that name. I’ve had first hand experience of mums saying how they prefer their child to be referred to by their full name but it just doesn’t happen. Maybe humans are lazy, that’s why we like to shorten everything.. who knows!

Not sure if it helps but in Spanish Gabriel is pronounced as Gah-bree-elle so all the Gabriels I know go by either Gab (Gah-b), Gabo (Gah-boh) or Gabs (Gah-bs)

I tried my hardest to explain the pronunciation

Yeh. I wonder if the OP has managed to keep it as the full 'Gabriel' now that he'll be at school! Hope so 😀

Apologies. Not RTFT

What about
G
Gee
Eel
E-el (like the ending )
Archie (arch angel)
Angel
Turtle (ninja)
I quite like E-el or ree-el from the endings.
No idea how I would spell them.

Yeah. But I dont reccomend anyone naming their kid gabriel. They always found a way to put gay in the name like gay-briel

ldnstb123 · 02/06/2020 23:58

A family member of mine is called Gabriel and we call him either 'gabs' or 'gabby'

Retr0 · 02/06/2020 23:59

Guacamolelife, my family are from Brazil and they say it like that there, but I grew in england where that say gay-briel

Pippilangstrumpfie · 03/06/2020 08:11

In English it's always pronounced Gayb or Gay briel. In many other languages it's Gab or Gab riel.

PuntoEBasta · 03/06/2020 08:13

ZOMBIE

Gabriel is nine years old now.

leahjenkinson · 18/07/2020 01:33

I have a Gabriel Elias, I just call him Gabriel or angel. Gaby (like baby) is cute. I hated Gabe too but if he likes it when he’s older it’s his choice :)

flooredbored · 19/07/2020 07:04

How about Gabi, like Gadi but with a b?

midsomermurderess · 19/07/2020 16:26

Gay is or used to be used in Ireland but I can see that might not be an option. What about Gabi. Or, being really controversial, use the full name. 3 syllables, not hard.

Are u sure u want a name where you don't like the usual shortened version? Wouldn't it be better to pick a name where u did like the usual shortened version?
