nn for Eliza

Eliza is on our list for dd due in july.
What are the likely nn going to be when she goes to school or in later life? I could call her by a nn and hope people follow but i'd probably not want to shorten a name i think is so pretty as it is.
I'm dreading the thought of Eliza been shortened to Liz when she's older. should i steer clear if i hate Liz so much?
Is the nn Elsie for Eliza pushing it too far?
Any comments appreciated Smile

El
ellie
liv
lizzy
liza
eeli
zee

Why not just go with elsie as name not nn

noonar · 11/05/2011 20:10

i love eliza. its dd2's nmiddle name.
i thibk 'lize' would be a more obv nick name than liz.

why not choose elsie- which is fab, btw, if you like it so much?

Eliza is a nickname (albeit one now used as a name in itself). If you don't want her known by a shortening, correct (politely) anyone who does it. NNs at school can be completely random and have nothing to do with the actual name of a child so that's hardly worth worrying about now.

thanks for your posts
i also thought lize or liza would be a more obvious nn than liz and i'd be hoping thats what would happen.
its not that i'd be bothered if people shortened Eliza but more that i'd be bothered if they shortened it to Liz or lizzy so just wondered if people thought these were obvious nn's for Eliza.....

Strangely the Eliza's I know are both called Lulu by their families...sweet I think!

EsmeWatson · 12/05/2011 06:12

My 3 yr old dd is Eliza. She does go by Lizzie which I actually love and is Lulu to her dad and I. I really love her name.

Reason i want to avoid Liz or Lizzie been a nn is because my hubs long term ex was called that (short for elizabeth) so i don't really want my daughter known as Liz as that would be a bit weird. But i love the name Eliza so much its a shame i can't use it just because my hub had a life before me. Hub doesn't see the connection and say's its up to me whether we go for it or choose another name.
Would people think we have named our baby too much of a similar name to his ex and raise eyebrows?
The fact that this is crossing my mind, should that mean i should go for another name?
Its funny because i love all the names that decend from Elizabeth - betsy, elsie, libby, beth..... why does my hub have to have an ex called Liz

I have 20 tear old Eliza who chose to be Lize or Slyza as a teenager but has gone back now to Eliza or even Eliza Rose! Nobody in my hearing ever abbreviated her name, although now she is Auntie Liza as Auntie Eliza is hard to say!

Don't worry too much have it if you like it.......
