Maya or Robin?

Janoschi · 01/05/2011 20:20

One week to go and we were dead-set on Robin for our daughter.... except I'm having a wobble and have put Maya back on the list...

I know Maya is really popular at the moment but it's the name of a very brave, very sweet friend of ours who lives in Japan and is having an appalling time struggling with the recent horrific events.....

The name Robin has no background - we just love it.

What do you think?

Love them both - have one as a middle name maybe? Maya Robin sounds nice. I know a few Robin's but both are boys - think the girl spelling is Robyn??

Exogenesis · 01/05/2011 20:26

My DD is a Robyn. I wanted to spell it with The I but was told no.

Both names are lovely and as babytum1 says why not use both and have one as a middle name?

Maternelle · 01/05/2011 20:29

I prefer Robin.

Janoschi · 01/05/2011 20:31

We'd sort of promised to use Deborah as a middle name because it goes back generations on both sides of the family.... but Maya Robin DOES sound pretty.... oh it's so blimmin' hard, isn't it?

Robin - it's lush and would have been our dd's name if we hadn't had boys.

MollysChambers · 01/05/2011 20:36

Robin is horrid.

Maya is "popular" but it's pretty.

MayBankHoliday · 01/05/2011 20:38

Maya - very pretty, I like it. V. popular as you say though. May as a first name would also be nice.

Robin - I don't like this, sorry. It's too unisex.

Deborah - like, underused and a classic (Biblical) name.

Janoschi · 01/05/2011 20:40

Really appreciate your input here, and glad you all like Robin! I do like the fact it has a lot of nickname potential - Robbie, Bobby, Bobbin, Bob, Binny, Birdie etc etc... and as DD will be a May baby (unless something goes SERIOUSLY off the chart!) I have a worry that Maya looks a tad unimaginative...

Robin Deborah
Robin Maya

Surname is a 2 syllable, obviously German name - think along the lines of Meister.

Robin is lovely, and few and far between, perfect!

I'd definitely use Maya as her middle nameSmile

babytum1 · 01/05/2011 20:45

It is such a hard decision choosing your child's name - especially when you cant decide between two. Probably not best to ask other's opinions as tastes on names are so personal!
Whichever name you choose that name will 'become' your DD and seem perfect.

Janoschi · 01/05/2011 21:02

I know this is true, Babytum1. I think I'm wobbling because the birth is very imminent and it's probably a distraction my brain is using to take my mind off the Big Event!

Maybe I'll see whether my DH picks Robin Maya or Robin Deborah. But thank you everyone for making me feel a lot more secure about Robin!

Robyn/Robin is lovely.

Maya... not so much...

MrsJohnDeere · 01/05/2011 21:42

Robin is lovely, but much prefer it as Robyn for a girl. Don't like Maya.

NadiaWadia · 03/05/2011 14:20

Maya is lovely and with an international vibe.

Robin is a boy's name to me, though I know it can be used for girls, mainly in the US, but then they do have some wierd naming ideas, don't they?

bananamom · 03/05/2011 14:59

Maya.

Robin is all boy to me.

Youremindmeofthebabe · 03/05/2011 15:25

I like Robyn.

And Maya.

no help am I?

pilates · 03/05/2011 18:01

Def Maya, do not like Robin for a boy or girl.

loobylu3 · 03/05/2011 19:32

Maya is much prettier imho.

Robin is okay but not a favourite of mine.

RobynLou · 03/05/2011 19:35

I'm a Robyn, def has to be with a y for a girl - it's bad enough being mistaken for a boy all the time without actually having the boys version of a unisex name!

I hated it when I was 8-10ish, but I love it now.

The only Maya I know is a loon, not in a good way, so I'd have to go with Robyn!

Bue · 03/05/2011 19:48

I love Robin! Most women I know with this name use that spelling, but they are all Canadian or American. I agree Robyn is more common for girls here. Amongst all the little old lady name I think it sounds fresh and unexpected.

LongWayRound · 03/05/2011 19:55

If you have German family, won't Maya make them think of Die Biene Maja? And if your surname is anything like Meister (Meyer?) then Maya's not going to sound great with it.

Janoschi · 03/05/2011 19:56

I know Robyn is more common for girls but there's a personal reason why we want the bird connection... so it'd have to be Robin like the bird or nothing!

Think we'll stick with Robin as a first name, but we're now undecided on Robin Deborah or Robin Maya....

Cheers for all the help!

Our surname doesn't actually start with a 'Mei' sound. Just tried to find a 2 syllable German name of similar feeling. Maybe Hauser is a better suggestion, in hindsight!

from 30 years experience of being called 'robin red breast' and and having 'rockin' robin' dedicated to me endlessly at student parties, I can confidently say using the y spelling is no bar to the association with the bird being made!

I also used to get 'robin hood' and 'rob-rob-robin goes bob-bob-bobing along'

these days alot of folk call me bob, said in the blackadder way though Hmm

FannyNil · 03/05/2011 22:51

Love Maya a lot.
