Names for DC2 please HELP!!!

BigCook · 29/04/2011 20:13

Just found out yesterday we are expecting dc2! Smile So I am aware it's early days so this is just for fun really but girl's name we have been sorted for a while, even before we had ds1!

However, the only boys name I love we already used for ds1!

I am stumped this time round. The names we like are Thomas but maybe a bit dull. I like it but don't love it. Same with Edward, not in love with it but like the sound. Quite like traditional names but something not in the top 5!

Any suggestions welcome. I also like the name Toby but not sure how it translates into adulthood, love it for a little boy but perhaps a bit too cutesy for a man.

DH loves Finlay but I think it may date a bit. DS! has a traditional name in top 20 but not been in top ten for over a century. HELP please!

I love Toby but would use Tobias with Toby as a nn. Does this make it a bit more adult-friendly?

Can you tell us your ds's name and the name you have picked out for a girl? It may help to get a bit more of an idea of your taste (and I'm nosy Grin).

Opening suggestions:

Jonathan - traditional, classy but not too popular
Magnus - my all-time favourite
Henry

FWIW, Edward's a great name. I know it doesn't set the world on fire, but it's such a good solid name with such good nns that I'd keep it as a serious contender.

Congratulations on your pregnancy Smile.

Thank you!

I like henry too. The name we have picked for a girl is Anna.

I like Tobias but dh says it sounds like a cat's name Hmm.

I just haven't found anything that really makes me think YES!

Love Edward. Really wanted it for DS2 but family disagreed.
Only Toby I know is a bit wet. Likewise Timothy.
What about Peter? In this area it still has a quiet but consistent following.

tammytoby · 29/04/2011 22:20

Anna is lovely. My friend has an Anna and a Quentin. I also like Henry, Thomas and Toby (but prefer Tobias).

Anna is great - such a timeless, classic name and I only know one child called it so it's not too popular. Good choice.

FWIW, I felt the same about boy's names. There were none that just leapt out and grabbed me in the same way that girls' names do. Thankfully, we're having DD3 in July so it's not something we've had to decide upon. I think that for some people boys' names just don't appeal in the same way that girls' names do.

I like Thomas, not keen on Toby or Finlay. The latter is far too overused and trendy.

How about..

Matthew
Evan
Joseph
Jacob
Kieran
Alexander
Samuel
Nicholas
Nathan
Ben

BigCook · 30/04/2011 18:23

thank you for the responses.

I love Matthew but our last name is Matthews so that's a BIG no no!

not keen on jacob, not sure why.

not liking samuel, just seems a bit stodgy sounding, not sure if that makes sense but it seems a bit think and clumpy to say.

So far I am liking tobias, daniel, eli. any more??!

Not fond of Finlay but do like Toby/Tobias. Love Elias but don't like Eli.

How about:

Barnaby
Gregory

I don't know a single Finlay.
John, Raymond, Bernard, Robert, Jonah?

BigCook · 30/04/2011 18:35

I don't know any Finlay's either! But seen a lot of posts on here saying how it's too popular so it will date a lot. However Jack has been number one for decade and I can't see that it will ever date so not sure about that.

I like John and Robert. Think Robert is rather lovely actually! Robbie could work as a baby.

Finlay won't date. Not here in Scotland anyway. It's very classic here, I believe it to be Royal. I really wouldn't listen to these lot on here. They can't see into the future can they?

Toby/Tobias is lovely as is Edward. Not so keen on Thomas, just seems a bit wet to me. I do however like Tom on its own.

BigCook · 30/04/2011 18:49

Thank you Angeliika. I am also kind of liking Stefan/ Steffan but dh says it's poncy.

Finlay is so far the only one he likes too and it's growing on me.

Angeliika · 30/04/2011 19:02

I just couldn't because of him.

puddle2 · 30/04/2011 19:15

I love the names you mentioned in your first post and have picked out Thomas/Tom and Finley if ours is a boy. I also worry that Finley (especially with an 'e' but prefer it this way) is a fashion name. Toby was on our list but we were put off because of friends with a Toby who we see a lot. May put it back on though - you've reminded me how lovely it is!
We also like Oliver, George, Noah and Oscar (another 'fashion' name?).

Girl wise, love Anna. Seeing as we seem to have similar taste boy wise, do you mind me asking what other girl names you like?! We have Emily, Holly, Matilda (fashion name?), Olive and Imogen (too popular?) on our list.

SomethingSuper · 30/04/2011 19:17

Samuel, I love it.

SomethingSuper · 30/04/2011 19:18

Oops sorry, must read thread before posting!

BigCook · 30/04/2011 20:07

Puddle2 I love the names Emily, Holly is really pretty but not sure if I'd use it as my due date is 25th December so may be a bit cheesy! Love Matilda and Imogen (sorry not keen on Olive but I think because I just think of Olive Oil from popeye!)

Off track now but I really like the name Katherine too but have been a bit put off by the Royal connotations this year! Not that' I'm anti Kate Middleton but just not sure I want people thinking we neamed her after her or anything.

Strangely since I don't like Olive for a girl, I do like Oliver for a boy! I think it's really nice. I like George and Oscar, only reason I wouldn't go for Noah is purely the religious link.

I think we have very similar taste!

IWillCountToThree · 30/04/2011 20:24

Thomas is very popular atm, i know of 3 in my circle of friends in the last 2 years.

I really like Oliver, but dh once had a dog called olly so it was off our list! Love Noah too.

The name we eventally chose for Ds hadn't been on a list of ours, ever, and we have 3dcs.

puddle2 · 30/04/2011 20:48

We wont use Emily because OH doesnt like it.
Holly for a christmas baby may be a tad cheesy!!
Matilda (nn Mattie) is lovely isnt it!
I like Olivia but its a little too flouncy somehow for me - plus really popular. Olive is our outside the box option. I think its cute!

Katherine is a family name for us - but agree that the Royal connection puts me off.

Ha ha - we are very similar....I wont use Noah because of the religious link either, despite liking the name!

Has anyone suggested Benjamin?
Not to my taste really, but Christopher, Sebastian, Dominic have the same kind of feel....ish!

MelinaM · 01/05/2011 00:03

What about Flynn as an alternative to Finlay?
