Any French speakers???

My friend told me of two names and I liked the sound of them. I've looked them up but can't find anything so I'm wondering if the names are made up. I'm not a fan of made up names so I hope not.

Léonique and Carmeline

And do you like them?

I kind of like Carmeline but it does sound a bit like a brand of make up or a household product to me (carmex, Vaseline, that kind of thing)

no idea whether they're real or not...

Leonique sounds a bit odd to me. Prefer more common Dominique

once met a girl called Amandine, which I love but don't think it translates into an English accent well.

Maud2011 · 26/04/2011 22:22

Leonique sounds made up and Carmeline... well I was thinking Vaseline but Achneinmeinbein beat me too it Grin

Leonie is pretty.

I once met a French girl called Florentine, which I think is a lovely name but it also makes me think "cake".

TethersEnd · 26/04/2011 22:26

French DP has never heard of either of those names.

CoteDAzur · 26/04/2011 22:26

I think Leonique is a name in Northern Europe somewhere. I've never heard of a Leonique in France.

Carmeline sounds more "reasonable" as a French name but still, I've never heard of one in France.

SilkStalkings · 26/04/2011 22:29

Amandine is lovely and not as hard as most Irish names to pronounce: AM-on-deen.

Léonique does sound more Black American - that would be my first impression anyway.

squeak2392 · 26/04/2011 22:33

Carmeline is a Hebrew name meaning 'Garden; orchard; vineyard', from the name Carmel.

Leonique is an uncommon Dutch name by the looks of things. Don't know what it means, but assumedly, it means 'Lion-like'.

MelinaM · 26/04/2011 23:00

Leonie is lovely, Leonique does indeed sound 'made-up'. Not at all keen on Carmeline, vaseline immediately sprang to mind here too!

Are there any other french names that you fancy?

Julenelle · 27/04/2011 09:26

Never heard of these names in France.

Funnily enough the top girl's name in France at the moment is Emma. When I gave birth here in Feb there were two Emmas being born.

Maybe do a google search on 'prenoms filles le top 20' to get some french ideas.

SilkStalkings · 28/04/2011 09:17

Also Léontine?

emeraldislander · 28/04/2011 20:54

Amandine isn't Irish.

SilkStalkings · 28/04/2011 21:50

I know, was just pointing out that most Irish names are harder than that French one to pronounce and English people still use them.

ozzysocks · 28/04/2011 21:59

Zélie is a lovely unusual French name :)
