Isla

Think it might be very popular now but what does everyone think? I like it but would the S in the spelling be a bit confusing for a child to learn to spell when you don't pronounce it as an s if that makes sense?!

Would it be pronounced Izla instead of eye-la?

Nah loads of names arent pronounced exactly as they are spelt. Isla is a lovely name anyway

meditrina · 11/04/2011 20:35

Probably no weirder to learn to spell than Thomas.

notanumber · 11/04/2011 20:36

I predict a few, 'oh no, it's too popular and chavvy' responses. but, you know, names are poular for a reason. It's a pretty name (though not my personal cup of tea). If you like it, use it.

As for spelling, it's no more confusing than, say - Chloe - is to spell and that has been in the top ten for a kazillion years.

I'd also say that it is popular enough for most people to know how to say and spell it.

It's Eye-la, btw.

I love it! I think it's pretty and classic without sounding old. :)

Thanks all

I love Isla, it's always been one of my favourites, but the recent surge in popularity has put me offSad

SolarPanel · 11/04/2011 23:28

It's quite nice, although very popular as you say. Iona would be more unusual. I don't think there would be any problem spelling Isla, as it is popular at the moment so people will be familiar with it.

notanumber · 11/04/2011 23:44

If you really are fussed about the but-what-if-there-are-five-other-little-Islas-in-her-class-at-school thing, how about Éanna?

helendigestives · 12/04/2011 09:01

It's the same principle as 'Island', which isn't izz-land.

emeraldislander · 12/04/2011 19:20

Eanna - I thought that was a boy's name.

Beamur · 12/04/2011 19:22

Chum of mine spells her DD's name Islay - pronounced eye-la, like the island.

Onion1968 · 12/04/2011 21:07

It's a lovely name but for goodness sake pronounce it properly. People don't pronounce John as Jo-hn and Thomas as Th-omas or T-homas.

A1980 · 12/04/2011 22:56

I don't like it. It sounds like "Isle of" pronounced badly.

Friend at Uni named Isla got married to man named Mr White. Isla White....!!!!!

littlemissw · 13/04/2011 12:57

Absolutely lovely name, but very popular IMO. I really like Myla/Mylah too.

saoirse86 · 13/04/2011 13:18

I like it whether it's popular or not. I think it's a nice balance of being pretty and strong at the same time.

I managed to learn to spell my name before any of the other children at school, so Isla shouldn't be too hard!

Beamur Islay is the scottish way of spelling it isn't it? might be talking rubbish

A1980 she should've kept her own name!

nopinkplasticshite · 14/04/2011 14:24

How about the - possibly Irish?? - version, Eila?
