What do you think of the name Norman for a boy? My brother laughed when I mentioned it.

What do you think?

I know older Normans...not a name I would choose but we all grow into our names so it would readily be accepted! Norrie for short?

NatMac · 12/04/2011 10:10

Sorry not keen.... My husband and I still use it as an insult at home. Children of the seventies eh?!

What about Arthur?

neolara · 12/04/2011 10:49

Just awful. Would be cruel.

We have two Normans in our lives. One being my 80 year old Grandad and the other is our cat.

I love older names but Norman? Hmm

Mrsdoasyouwouldbedoneby · 12/04/2011 15:48

I'd probably use it....

I called my DD an unusual old people name and she has lived up to it... I hope... Starts to feel worried...

TBH the MW was so horrified when I told her DD's name that she said, "I won't put it down yet" (on the name card!!).

Oh and there is an old lady with the exact same name (aside from surname, cos that would be creepy), living in my gran's villiage, tho I did't realise at the time.

I considered Branwell for a boy. The association with a young man who drunk himself to death didn't sway me, but with my surname the child would have been lisping forever.

Thing is with DD's name, there are nice literary connotations.... There are only bad ones with norman....

I would agree with the "Its a Dads generation name" type comments but I will always be thinking nice things about a Norman I once knew who was an amazing person and roughly the same age as me.

I personally would rather call a son of mine Norman, than for example, Mason, Taylor, Tyler, Tyson, Bailey and all those other surname as a Christian name or modern trendy boys names such as Diesel, Kai etc.

Agree with the negative comments about Nigel - had 2 in my final year at college - 1 was a right 'Nigel', the other was known as Stav and hated his name.

If dd had been a boy, he would have been 'Harry Norman' - Harry was fil's name and Norman was his mother's maiden name and was my df's name, too. For him it was definitely the lesser of 2 evils - his middle name was Alonzo! He must have got some teasing for that when he started school in 1912 among all the patriotically-named Georges, Alberts, Edwards and Williams Grin

Two wrongs don't make a right, ineedagood...

Your brother's reaction was honest, Norahjen. And he wouldn't be the only person you know to do that but they'd probably add ' poor little thing' when you weren't around.

Awful!!

But Norman Foster - the famous architect may give it some cred to those in the know.

But still horrendous sorry!

sarahtigh · 12/04/2011 20:11

halfcaffodils · 12/04/2011 21:17

Ask my mum - it's one of her middle names! (Named after her dad). Fine as a middle name I'm sure...

vickyw11 · 12/04/2011 22:02

My husband is called Norman. It is never shortened to Norm by anyone and to be honest, the night we met, I thought he was pulling my leg when he said his name was Norman (not that I've ever told him that).

He suits his name and it has done him favours too because he is self employed and once people meet him they never forget his name.

Saying all that, we didn't call our son Norman and I think he would have changed it when he was younger if he could of. I think you should be able to call your child whatever pleases you and it is a good, old fashioned, English name.

I LOVE Norman. Had a great uncle Norman, and he was fab :) My other half has totally vetoed it though ;) We're stuck for boys names....and just found out we're having a boy! Thinking cap on.
