What do you think of the name Norman for a boy? My brother laughed when I mentioned it.

What do you think?

What would you critics think about Normandy as a name for a girl, I wonder?

Ariesgirl · 11/04/2011 11:55

For God's sake woman are you out of your mind?

I'm with your brother I'm afraid!

tryingtoleave · 11/04/2011 11:56

I'm with bubbaluv.

mamalovebird · 11/04/2011 12:24

If you like it, go for it. It's not that bad a name. I think Norm would be quite cute on a little boy.

My brother and SIL have just had a boy and named him Sidney, which I like. I toyed with Archie for my ds but am glad I didn't go for it now as there are lots of Archies around now.

One of my NCT friends didn't tell anyone her chosen name as she had had a few negative reactions and was worried but she went for it in the end and I can't imagine her ds with any other name.

blondepinhead · 11/04/2011 12:42

When I was little I had a rabbit called Norman, after Norm from Cheers. He was lovely. The rabbit, I mean

I think it's a great name, obviously. As you were :o

mamalovebird · 11/04/2011 12:59

I had a hamster called Norman.
I also once worked with a lad called Norman. He was young, good looking, cheeky and a hit with all the girls. They certainly weren't put off by his name Wink

ivykaty44 · 11/04/2011 13:29

Norman Bates was the physco in the shower ewewewew Shock

LadyOfTheManor · 11/04/2011 13:36

No. Norman is for old people, a bit like;

"Let's have a sherry with Norman & Marge". That doesn't sound out of place does it? No, it doesn't, that's the problem.

tonythetiger · 11/04/2011 13:38

My cat is called Norman. He's gorgeous, but a bit of a plank (as someone said upthread about Normans). I really wouldn't.

nomorefrizz · 11/04/2011 13:55

Norman Cook alias Fatboy Slim he must be the only cool Norman on the planet. Don't do it.

MooMooFarm · 11/04/2011 13:56

It's an old-people name that's not cool again yet and I can't imagine it will ever be! And also no to Normandy for a girl.

How about Raymond, Gerald or Lawrence (going on the theme of un-trendy old-people names, but nicer ones!).

eggspectantmum · 11/04/2011 14:18

Like Norman. But please not Stanley as second name!

pranma · 11/04/2011 14:19

He's not Normal...no he's Norman[cue shrieks of laughter] overheard in playground some years ago.Children today will make the association with Naughty Norman Price from Fireman Sam.Please....don't do it.

thebody · 11/04/2011 14:32

awful sorry on a par with doris, ethel and gordon.. please dont!!!

dangalf · 11/04/2011 14:45

lots of negative connotations for me and not a name i'd ever use. When I was at school a "norman" was a bit of a plonker.

KiiKii · 11/04/2011 15:09

Awful. Don'd do it to the poor boy!!

mathanxiety · 11/04/2011 15:37

Yikes

blueberrysorbet · 11/04/2011 15:49

i have a friend called norman who was v handsome, a big hit with the ladies and very successful.. he did have a nice irish accent mind. no one thougt twice about his name.. it was just his name:)

dolceebanana · 11/04/2011 15:50

I just don't think Norman is a name that could be viewed as attractive in the way that Alfie, Arthur etc have become. To me, it's in the vein of 'Ernie' or 'Nigel'.

Georgimama · 11/04/2011 15:52

I think along with Stanley this is the granddad name which is not going to make a come back. Please don't.

grubbalo · 11/04/2011 16:01

Oh Stanley has definitely already made a comeback, so don't see why Norman couldn't? I think Ernie is going to as well.
Agree that if you don't want negative comments, then just don't even mention possible names to people - you will just get stupid comments like they hate the name as they went to school with a horrid one, X on Eastenders is a horrible character etc etc. Whereas if you wait, then you'll (usually) just get nice comments.

exoticfruits · 11/04/2011 16:04

You have to be absolutely sure that he would have the personality to carry it off-something you can't tell in the first few weeks.

Cattleprod · 11/04/2011 16:12

To be honest, if you ever want to have grandchildren in the future, I'd steer clear of Norman. It really is a woman-repeller of a name, well into anorak and trainspotter territory.

minderjinx · 11/04/2011 16:18

I had a friend called Norman. He got loads of stick about it, and was delighted when we decided to call him Normsk, which has stuck. But then my given name wasn't Jinx either. I think you end up with a name that suits, one way or another. My brother is known as Sib, which is short for sibling.
