What do you think of the name Norman for a boy? My brother laughed when I mentioned it.

What do you think?

If he is really good looking, excellent at sport, popular with girls, intelligent and sociable he will be fine- but it is a huge handicap if he is lacking some of those assets.

Raahh · 11/04/2011 17:46

Since Fatboy Slim's real name is not Norman, but something like Quentin (can't be arsed to google), he may have been ironic in his choice of pseudonym...Grin

Say 'No' to Norman!
(with apologies to Mr Foreman, up thread)

scottishmummy · 11/04/2011 17:47

PsammeSimpleEgg · 11/04/2011 18:12

It's a bit of a Rodney of a name.

ValiumBandwitch · 11/04/2011 18:43

There are still NOrmans alive who aren't that old, so it's just very predictable that everybody hates it right now. In 15 years it'll be like Stanley or Bertie.

I don't like it because 'norman' seems like a race as well as a name. The Normans, is that another word for the English Blush I should know that I suppose.

candleshoe · 11/04/2011 19:43

Norman is a dreadful name! Give your child a chance of a happy childhood and just say NO to Norman!

peeriebear · 11/04/2011 19:50

I know a teenage Norton (named after the motorbike) and he pulls it off well. I wouldn't go for Norman at all, even if it was a relative's name (my beloved grandad is Ronald and I wouldn't call my son that either!)

Chulita · 11/04/2011 19:52

Do you lot remember the Twix adverts with 'a break from the Norm' and a picture of a skinny man with tweed jacket and massive glasses? About 10 years ago now but I couldn't name my child Norman just cos of those adverts.

norahjen · 11/04/2011 20:09

My brother is in hysterics reading this!! Ok I think it is a no-go then.

flippintired · 11/04/2011 20:56

God I know some 2 year old Stans and Ernie's def already made a come back here. Great namesSmile. When I was hankering after another dc a couple of years ago I wanted to call a boy Stanley or Ernie, now I think it's rather over used in my neck of the woods .

mamasmissionimpossible · 11/04/2011 21:01

FreakoidOrganisoid · 11/04/2011 21:25

My dad is Norman and DH's name has also come up on this thread, likened to Norman (ha, ha, wait till I tell him!) All I need now is for DS2's name to come up as well as some people said it was cruelty but we loved it and couldn't resist.

CocktailQueen · 11/04/2011 23:19

No way - horrible!!

NormanTheForeman · 11/04/2011 23:22

I have some good mates caled Stan and Ernie. There is nothing wrong with them. And nothing wrong with me either....

Norman is a lovely, wonderful name and one you can be proud of....

TiffanyToothache · 11/04/2011 23:28

It goes well with your name, OP.
Norman and Norah.
Nice.
(Not really, sorry),

flyingspaghettimonster · 11/04/2011 23:33

honestly it is not my nature to try to dissuade a parent's choice of names, as I was very hurt when my two top favourite names got refused by my family... but I really think Norman has negative connotations to many people in the Uk. Plus, m Mum found a new man a few years back - looked just like Michael Caine and was a total lewd, vile pervert who made all sorts of inappropriate comments to us... he wore tiny magenta running shorts despite being 60+ years old.

That is a Norman, not your gorgeous little baby...

jellybeansontoast · 11/04/2011 23:58

Gah. No.

WebMistress · 12/04/2011 07:31

hideous -
Norman no friends
Stormin' Norman
What a norman -

Please don't do it! Think of the teasing that little one will go through!

ValiumBandwitch · 12/04/2011 08:45

I dislike the name, but it is still a 'normal' name. BY the time the child had any sort of awareness that adults considered his name an odd choice, he'd be about ten, by which time, I bet you anything he wouldn't be the only Norman..
