Maria? I know it's very common popular in the med, but would it be a bit different for babies here born now? Looking for a name to go with Isabella (yes - me again, still stuck..)

I wouldn't end it in 'a' if you have Isabella. Just a bit twee to have 2 'a' sounds together: Isabella and Jacinta.

But Maria is ok. How about Marie?

I like it, I only know 1 who is around 30 but Its one of those classic names that transcends all age groups imo.

I love the name Maria. Both DH and I are blonde and pasty so do not think it would suit us.

Maria is an excellent name. Classic and classy but hardly used in UK.
Sounds a bit Victorian.

Also, I adore 'the Sound of Music'!

It's a lovely name, especially when pronounced in the older English way (Ma-rye-a).

Oh great. Lots of positive responses. I thought you'd think it a bit dull. DH has likes it (amazingly - as he wins the gold for indecision). Except he wants Marie (which I like less).. Oh well we're at least getting closer!!

Maria is my middle name and I've always loved it. People will always understand your name wherever you go if your name is Maria, as it is popular all over the world.
Incidentally, as I was reading this thread the Blondie song 'Maria' came on the radio..could be a sign!
