In Italian it's EL-ena. It was one of my university tutor's names and she used to get very annoyed about it! So if I saw it I would think it was that.

expectingno3 · 06/04/2011 19:14

Yup, el-AY-na. I think its a lovely name and not very common. Go for it!

Zoonose · 06/04/2011 19:17

DD is Elena so am biased! We pronounce as the others here, elayna, think it is prettier but it is a name used in spain, Italy, as well as Russia and eastern Europe where it tends to be pronounced differently. Good choice! DD is 11 months btw.

LittleCheesyPineappleOne · 06/04/2011 19:21

ELL-eh-nah

MmeLindt · 06/04/2011 19:22

As the others have said. Lovely name.

Emelene · 06/04/2011 21:05

Ell-eh-nah. But there's no reason it couldn't be El-ay-na. Beautiful names.

Tinasan · 06/04/2011 21:27

My DD is Elena - and we use the Italian pronunciation El-eh-nah (DH is Italian). Think it's pronounced el-ay-na in Spanish though so you can suit yourself!

ZenNudist · 06/04/2011 21:37

I'd say El-ay-narr. It's a nice name but I could never use it as it'd be too similar to my own. I think she would have a life of being called El-en-ah by some people (ime) but it's not a problem.

DesertOrchid · 06/04/2011 21:58

Eh-LAY-na here too.

scottishmummy · 06/04/2011 22:00

el-ain-ahh id say

helendigestives · 06/04/2011 22:10

I knew an Elena who was 'EL-eh-nuh' but I'd generally pronounce it 'ell-AY-nuh'.

BeautifulBlondePineapple · 07/04/2011 11:18

Ell-ay-na. Beautiful name. It was on my list for DC2 and is on it again for DC3.

I also really like Lena (pronounced the Russian way of Lay-na), but I was put off it after a quick poll on here as everyone said they would pronounce it Lee-na.

mathanxiety · 07/04/2011 16:31

That's a shame -- sorry I missed your poll, BBP. I'm in the Lay-na camp.

Perpetuallypregnant · 07/04/2011 20:09

Thanks, I really like it and think it works with our other names. I think its quite classy and I can imagine myself calling her Lainey or Laina for nn when shes a baby.

Looking at the spelling I would say Ell een a, otherwise you would spell elaina surely?

Tinasan · 08/04/2011 08:00

Actually, (H)Elena is completely correct - the Italian way of pronouncing the name, which is by the way the Italian version of Helen.

piratecat · 08/04/2011 08:07

reads like (h)elena to me.

heh-lay-nor.

thirtysomething · 08/04/2011 08:13

'Tis my 2nd fave girls' name - and I would say it EL-en-a

You have very good taste!
