Dh and I have the name Eliza quite high on our list for dd due in July.
Thing is dh's significant ex was called Elizabeth, nn Liz. It was over 10 yrs ago now and it doesn't bother me or Dh that Eliza is a variant of Elizabeth but was wondering if other people might pick up on it (we only picked up on it after realising a nn for Eliza was Liz).
Would it not been seen as weird in anyway that we use Eliza (I'm hoping her nn's would be Lila or Liza as oppose to Liz or Lizzie!!).
many thanks for your opinions

no i personally think its fine. especially as its pronounced different (as in elise/eleye). if you call her Lila from a young age and introduce her as lila and just have Eliza for formal things anyway people wouldnt even pick up on it, but its a shame to not use the name you want bcause your hubby's ex has a similar name.

I think it's fine. I know that Eliza is a derivative of Elizabeth but I think it's sufficiently well-established as a name in its own right for it to have a different feel. Agree with Charlie that if you use your choice of nn from the start then everyone else will take their lead from you.

I don't think it would occur to most people.

I like Lisa or Eli as NN for Eliza... I don't like Liz -- very American...

Thanks for your opinions

I was hoping you would all say that

I didn't think Liz would be the nn most people would choose for Eliza anyway as it is more dated when there's so many other nice ones to choose from that are more obvious... but i just wanted to check what people thought.

thanks Smile

I don't think it's a problem at all.

I wouldn't shorten Eliza, it's beautiful as it is! I think Elizabeh is shortened more because it's so long.
