Girls names with a bit of attitude

I'm looking for names which aren't too typically girly and suggest a damsel in distress i.e Pansy, Poppy, Gabriella etc...these are all very nice but just aren't for me....according to me dh I'm looking for names with a bit of "spunk". We already have a Ben(Benjamin) and a Harry...oh and it's twin girls!! So i need two names :)

A friend has an Athena. Definitely a strong name for a strong little girl who survived against all odds!

Definitely Zoe, we have one of those

I thought about Agathe and Agnes (DH is french, so they become Agate and Ayn-yes). Overruled by DH - just as well, ours is a real little Zoe.

Carrotsandcelery, I agree about the Irish, Scottish and Welsh names.

I think Germanic and Scandinavian names have the same sort of gravitas to them -- thinking of Dagmar, Renata, Frida, Cosima, and even Clara.

Romilly
Romola
Joely
Petra
Cora

Apologies if anyone has already suggested these!

IslaValargeone · 07/04/2011 19:30

Rudy
means wolf...and they have attitude.

GhostInTheBackOfYourHead · 07/04/2011 19:32

ooh, silkstalkings mentioned my DD's name in an early post. Not often do I see Lilith mentioned on here.
I named my daughter after Adam's first wife who refused to be subordinate and lie underneath a man. She was banished and demonised for her trouble. That's patriarchy for you.

chubbly · 07/04/2011 19:36

I wanted strong names for my girls too so really interesting to see what people consider a strong name. I love Zia - as in the heroine from cities of gold? Also I like Alanna - i think she was a girl knight in a book I read when I was young

I agree with the earlier post that shorter names come across as a bit 'grrrr' and names with an 'ee' sound feel more soppy.

SaffaSouthernFairy · 07/04/2011 20:08

How about Matilda (shortened to Tilda) and Jennifer (shortened to Ginny)?

Raahh · 07/04/2011 20:37

I have Millicent- it means 'brave, strong' and a bossier, more opinionated feistier 4year old I have yet to meet. We do call her Millie, but the feistiness shines throughGrin

I also have a Philippa, nn pippa, which I notice you like, fab name- and I don't see it as horsey.(but she is only 6 months old, so a bit soon to check out how stroppy feisty she is!!Grin)

Bec10 · 07/04/2011 20:40

We were going to call our DD Rose but when she was born Rose just seemed too gentle - from the outset she's been a spirited little woman, so we called her Robyn (Bobs for short). I also like Audrey and Frances (her middle names) and:

Ramona - love it
Penelope - not obvious but it grows on you, and Penny is cool
Constance - Connie = cool
Roma - a shortlisted name for DD but it was too cool!
Lauren - elegant and feminine but not soft :)

Gettinthehangofthisatlast · 07/04/2011 22:42

how about Katrina

We spelt ours 'Catriona' (I'm Scottish) but it bugs me when people first see it written and pronounce the 'O' so go with the Germanic version.

blueglitter · 07/04/2011 23:28

My favourite girl with attitude name is Ripley...anyone who takes on an alien and wins definitely gets my vote. I think Thandie Newton called her daughter this.

Irishmu · 08/04/2011 08:37

Please, for your child's sake, NOT "Ramona" ugh! She'd NEVER forgive you!! Your child's attititude to life should not depend on her name but rather on how you raise her! Go with a name you like and you think she might like when she's older...but stay away from names that are "in" right now...they won't necessarily be "in" when she's a teenager...and fgs, I beg you, NOT "Ramona"!!!

Akandra · 08/04/2011 08:40

My daughter is Mallory which is unusual but I like it. I also considered Morgan.

Ramona is about 2700th in last years ONS name stats so hardly an "in" name! I think it's great and am planning on using it for my DD when she arrives.
