Similar sounding names but which is better (IYO)

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
Emelene · 04/04/2011 14:59

I like both, tbh. But I would pick Esme.

WalterFlipsticks · 04/04/2011 15:00

I love them both, and we have them both on our girls name list!
Esme is slightly more unusual I suppose, or certainly is here anyway, Sorry can't help because they are both lovely!

Tuschinski · 04/04/2011 15:14

Definitely Esme, love it, don't like Amy at all though it's only now I realise that they do sound similar.

Sbob · 04/04/2011 15:24

How do you pronounce Esme? Is is Ez-May??

dan1981 · 04/04/2011 15:45

Esme, just has that little bit more about it...IMO

ShowOfHands · 04/04/2011 15:50

I like Esme, but it's fairly trendy round here and you have the obvious problems with the 2 different ways of pronouncing it. I can never remember which child is Ezmee and which is Ezmay.

I don't know an Amy under about 25 but it's very pretty.

growing3rdbump · 04/04/2011 16:49

I really want to call my DC3 Esme, and had also considered Amy. I like Esme best, but both are lovely!

nancy10 · 04/04/2011 18:05

Amy, but it depends on where you live and how popular it is there. Esme is sooo popular that I've gone right off of it and it was a name I had quite liked. And I find the whole EsME EsMAY thing annoying!

CharlieCoCo · 04/04/2011 19:06

both are nice, depends if you want a common name or a more 'exotic' name.

exoticfruits · 04/04/2011 19:12

Amy

dollyk · 04/04/2011 19:45

I like amiee spelt the french way is nicer i think?

Folicacid · 04/04/2011 19:52

Esme without a doubt, Amy I think is a bit boooring.

nah i prefer it aimee to amiee personally. or just amy

qwerty123 · 05/04/2011 00:25

Esme

startail · 05/04/2011 00:53

Amy or Amiee either is due a comeback and with all the Eleanor, Ella, Ellie, Evie, Eva, Emilys and the one Esme around here we really don't need any more E's

sancerrre · 05/04/2011 00:55

Amy

Perpetuallypregnant · 05/04/2011 10:01

I really like Amy actually

think it has more longevity than Esme which will date. I know amys of all ages.

meditrina · 05/04/2011 10:04

Both are fine - I prefer Amy (and don't know any in RL - do know two x Esme (both Ez-may)).

NatMac · 05/04/2011 10:06

Esme - very pretty and slightly unusual

booandbump · 05/04/2011 10:09

I prefer Amy. I think Esme sounds quite harsh. Also the difference ways of pronouncing it puts me off.

MackerelOfFact · 05/04/2011 16:23

Amy is lovely and classic. Esme is a bit faddy, she will have a brother called Finley or Noah.

I would go for Esme if I thought people were going to pronounce it Es-may. Not if they were going to pronounce it Es-mee. It is popular at the moment, so will probably date. Amy is more timeless.

shimmerysilverglitter · 05/04/2011 16:32

Esme, pronounced as Es-mee, it is my favourite girls name but was vetoed by ex.
