So we couldnt decide on a name before baby arrived and just hoped a name came to us when we saw him but it didnt.

Ive had a look at baby name meanings for some inspiration and found Ethan, which means strong, firm and long lived. I like this because he has been unbelieveably strong from day one.

I just cant find it in me to commit to it 100% (the same as with every other name we have thought of). If we choose it he will be Ethan David.

Any thoughts or suggestions most welcome :)

We have pretty much decided not to use Ethan as although we like the name and the meaning we just think it is too similar to DP and doesnt go very well with DS1.

So that leaves us with Jamie, which we like but not keen on the meaning but thinking that no one ever really asks that so not a big problem, also I dont think it goes too well with his middle name David but its not awful either so think we may go with it as it really suits him and goes well with Alfie.

The only other contender was Harrison (Harri for short) which we liked throughout my pregnancy but not as keen on now, not sure why but kind of went off it. I do quite like Harry but we have a Harry in the family which is why I was going to go with Harrison so it would be a bit different.

Can I have your opinions on these names please?

Thanks x

Jamie is lovely, James is nicer. Classic. Listen to the song Sweet Baby James by James Taylor... It is lovely.
Harrison is a bit trendy for me. It's a surname in my eyes.

bibbitybobbityhat I absolutely love Ezra.
Ethan is one of those names I have never liked for some reason but it seems very popular so maybe it's just me

i like jame as a nickname but love james! I think jamie is ok when younger but don't know any older ones, so would be good to have james to fall back on.

And James David could be shortened to JD (for scrubs fans)

I have a James and he is just adorable. I love his name and we have only had nice comments about it. I also have a William and I think that both names sound nice as they are traditional - as of course is Alfie.

I named him after the apostle James (the great) and great certainly sums up my little monkey! Google it - he was a central member of the twelve so that was good enough for me!

I think once you're sort of settled on it it will become easier. We swithered on fergus for a few days ... Ds3 was going to be a Brodie and sometimes I still think did we make the right choice and is it too unusual but now it's just him if I know what I mean. I personally would register him as james and call him Jamie to give him the choice when he's older but I do like the name (it was on our list) and I think it's got longevity.

Hi all,
well 10 days on and we have finally decided on a name!!
We are going with Jamie David.
I do get all the comments about having james and jamie as a nickname and i do think its a brill idea and would be better for him when older but i really cant commit to James so we are going to stick with Jamie.

I just want to thank everyone who helped me out by posting it has made making a decision easier and although im still not 100% I know he will grow into it :) x x

:) Huge congratulations. It's a lovely name!

mykidseyessparkle · 10/04/2011 23:01

Lovely lovely lovely name. Have a son James and my dad is David so big thumbs up from me. my friend has a Jamie who we have seen today and he is such a sweet, kind natured boy ... I'm sure your little one will grow in this way too. With a lovely name like that he can't go wrong. Enjoy him.

justbeingmummy · 11/04/2011 10:30

Thankyou so much you are all lovely and make me feel so much more reassured about my choice x x

You may never be 100% on the name - I had my heart set on something for my daughter so that we left registering her until the final moment - she was almost 5 weeks old and still called 'Biscuits' :-) Finally, outside the registry office we tossed a coin - my choice was Rosa Marie, husband chose Rose Marie. He won. I still wish I had won, but she is a Rose through and through, and my previous beloved name of Lorellei would have seemed silly. If you go with Ethan David, he will become Ethan David and you will grow to love it. Just don't worry if it takes a bit of time to grow on you :-)

If he looks like a Jamie then name him Jamie, Its not one of my fav's as I really dont like J names but I will say I have known lots of children named this and also my lecturer at college was called Jamie, he was a really tall guy, blond hair, really strong and very broad. So I have never classed it as a nn because of him.
And you are right it goes with Alfie.

justbeingmummy · 12/04/2011 22:14

Well he is all registered and offical so no going back now!
Im glad now tho, it is a weight off my mind and it is growing on me (and baby) every day!

Thanks all :) x
