Hi,
I'm Canadian, DH is French, so we need a bilingual name. What do you think of Colleen?I think it sounds really cute in French, but want to make sure it's not too old-fashioned/dull in English.

Lovely name, i knew a few (young and adult) growing up in South Africa - nobody ever commented on its original meaning...which i've only recently found out about myself! Go for it if you like it :)

SaffaSouthernFairy · 28/04/2011 17:21

Nothing wrong with Colleen - never knew about it meaning 'girl' and anyway, you may not call your son 'boy' but 'Guy' for a boy is perfectly acceptable.. And to be honest i don't think there is anything wrong with Colleen Rooney anyway. Do prefer Collette but thats just my opinion :)

emeraldislander · 28/04/2011 17:29

wife of Wayne Rooney. he plays for Man Utd. Penchant for prostitutes.

I like it, but I'm Irish so it's not a common name round our parts due to it being the Irish word for 'girl'

mathanxiety · 28/04/2011 17:32

The name Guy doesn't mean 'boy'. It's French and not related to the word guy.

emeraldislander · 28/04/2011 17:35

Math I think non-Irish don't have the same "urgh you're calling her Cailin!!" reaction to the name that we do.

Good luck choosing though x

Jayne19 · 28/04/2011 18:39

Jaspants · 28/04/2011 19:59

Fraid my first thought was Rooney too

BigSooz · 28/04/2011 20:37

Very Oirish. Not keen, sorry.

mich54321 · 12/05/2011 23:45

what about Amelie ? French sounding but still sounds good in English.

GetOrfMoiCase · 12/05/2011 23:49

God no, a hideous name. You have loads of lovely French names to choose from, don't pick that. It sounds like a fat middle aged chambermaid.

ChuckYouFarlie · 13/05/2011 00:15

As a name it sucks ass.

ChuckYouFarlie · 13/05/2011 00:15

Note I used the north american spelling of 'arse'.

I am culturally aware.

MrsvWoolf Coleen is Wayne Rooney's wife Smile.

I would agree that in the UK Colleen wouldn't be the best name choice (middle aged, Nolan, Rooney etc spring to mind) BUT I think if you are french speaking, living in Paris, it could be a great name. I bet it sounds so much better in a french accent too Grin.
