Mia

I really love the name but apparently it's number 10 in the popularity chart... Thing is, I've never met a little girl called Mia and I work in schools. Lots of Olivias, Ellies and Megans though.

How much notice should I take of popularity charts?

Well, it's up to you. I admit that when I meet Yet Another Oliver or Ella I privately roll my eyes, but if you're not fussed by the popularity thing, then go for it.

Sorry, that's not helpful, but a popularity chart isn't a subjective thing. If Mia is #10 it's popular, even if you've not met one. It could depend on what age you're teaching, as well; the popularity chart from 2010 is only going to hit the schools in 2015, iyswim.

I teach Y1 and 2. Apparently the name Mia has hung around the No.10-15 position since 2004 so surely I should be seeing some... I actually love Maya too but felt it was a bit gimmicky.... Just getting a bit frazzled with the whole thing. Only got 4 weeks left!

gorgeous name, but it is quite popular, not as much as Isabelle etc though.

MamaLazarou · 25/03/2011 12:23

Does the popularity chart bother you that much? It might be popular across the country but fairly rare in your town.

belgo · 25/03/2011 12:25

It's very popular on the continent amongst middle aged women. Short for Maria, or Anne-Marie.

devoncreamtea · 25/03/2011 12:39

gorgeous name. i agree with belgo, very rarely overrun with pop names in one area. go for it, it's a beautiful name both to write and to say.

baskingseals · 25/03/2011 12:47

i like both Mia and Maya, but prefer Maya.

lovely names

Jemma1111 · 25/03/2011 13:53

My daughter is Mia Rose and I obviously think it's a beautiful name, also you can't shorten it

mamsnet · 25/03/2011 13:58

I have encountered a couple of Mias.. One is about 12 now and the other a baby; it works fine for both.

My nephew is Jack, actually.. And it has never been an issue. He's never had another friend Jack, had one in his class, on his teams etc either.

talkingnonsense · 25/03/2011 14:02

Do you say it mee-a or my-a?

Jemma1111 · 25/03/2011 14:14

I think most people pronounce it Mee-a as I do

LiquoriceLila · 25/03/2011 19:35

I know two Mia's. One is 9 and the other is 2

muminthemiddle · 25/03/2011 23:50

If you like the name then I wouldn't let the popularity of it affect me. Why pick a name simply because no one else has chosen it?

Janoschi · 26/03/2011 00:12

I only know one Mia, who was my penpal when I was a teenager. So she'd be mid-thirties now. Love Maya too but there's an issue with it being the name of a very popular computer animation software and a lot of my family are in the film industry. Think I'd get ribbed too much!

My partner has just suggested Robin Mia K*** as The Name.... really like it.
