Hi

I'm really struggling this time round to think of names I like! Well, there is one girls name I LOVE but DH not keen.

Can I share the list with you for feedback? It's really long but I developed this with the idea that there has to be one name on it that DH likes! There are actually a couple he's ok with, but they don't, I think, go with our MN Alice (DH's grandmother's name). Surname is one syllable.

Devon
Iris
Isis
Ramona
Frances
Eloise
Darcie
Scarlett
Aimee
Amber
Maeve
Florence
Agnes
Telma
Esmee
Romilly
Agatha
Innes
Elizabeth
Grace
Jasmine
Maya
Savannah
Indira

The struggle to come up with a boy's name is even worse but I won't bore you with that one - yet!

Hey! Let's set the record straight here. Aimee is not a 'silly spelling!' It's the original French spelling of the name, Aimée, just without the accent. 'Amy' is the anglicised spelling of the original French name.

Thanks 80sMum, I feel redeemed! Although my DD1 has a french name, minus the accent, and we're not french, so perhaps best that I don't pick another one!

Iris Alice sounds terrible! Maeve and Beth are lovely. Frances, Agnes, Esme are all good. If I were to have another DD (which I won't), I'd choose Agatha. Maya is nice too. But why not go with Alice as first name - that is such a lovely name.

I like Elliot, Francis, Seth, Jude, Silas and Edwin from your boys' list.

Agree that Iris Alice doesn't go well.

bibbitybobbityhat · 21/03/2011 11:03

Frances. By a mile.

Love: Elizabeth (Classic, beautiful, timeless, lots of nn choices). Elizabeth Alice is excellent.

Like: Frances,Grace

Don't mind: Esmee, Eloise, Florence,

Don't like:
Agnes - Ag is a hard sound
Iris - pretty flower but don't like name
Aimee - pretty but a bit twee
Innes - but Inez or Ines nice if you have Spanish connection.
Indira - pretty but hard to name a child after Indira Gandhi?

Really don't like:
Devon - NOooo it's a county
Isis - Egyptian goddess
Ramona - Ramones were a punk band. Ugly unless you're Spanish.
Darcie - Mr Darcy great, Darcie no unless you are Darcey Bussell the world famous ballerina and can get away with it. It has the sound 'arse / arsey' in it which is a big disadvantage for a child.
Scarlett - Scarlet Woman. 'Scar' for nn? No no no
Amber - Red, Amber, Green?!
Maeve - how to pronounce it?
Telma - uh? Tell me what?
Romilly - Just my personal opinion.
Agatha - Christie. Too old fashioned. Hard sounding.
Jasmine - too flowery for me. Too twee for a grown woman who isn't delicate and, possibly, oriental.
Maya - Mayan civilization in America? Maya -nnaise?
Savannah - African grassland
Indira - pretty but hard to name a child after Indira Gandhi?

OK well here are my views on the boys' names.

Flynn - dislike
Elliot (or Elliott) - dislike
Francis - like a lot and also like nn of Frank/Frankie
Clarke - no awful as first name
Bailey - terrible
Caleb - not for me but not awful
Seth - ditto
Louis - OK but quite a lot of them about
Jude - girls name
Monty - like this one
Silas - too much like silage
Arthur - could grow on me
Edwin - prefer Edward

sorry about that but only would consider Francis or Monty.

cremedelacreme · 22/03/2011 22:09

Thanks everyone! I'm quite surprised how little of the names on my list people like but, then again, it's such a personal thing, I perhaps shouldn't be!

Definitely food for thought. Thanks!
