Hiya

We've narrowed it down to the following, only got 6 weeks left and still can't decide eek!

Luca - poss favourite but seem to be meeting lots of them and like unusualish names..

Keir - the only name with a reason behind it, Keir Hardie being the namesake (hero of mine) (not popular with either parents)

Flynn - Just like the sound of it

Gabriel - was a fave but put off by childish brother in law making jokes

Dexter - love it but dh and I big into the tv show which is a tiny bit weird with the serial killer connection..

James - the only popular name we like... but too many Jameses?

Any thoughts appreciated, though please be kind to hormonal pregnant person lol!

I like Luca and James.

Have you watched Press Gang? Dexter Fletcher plays a likable character there.

Tommy · 20/03/2011 00:46

not many James around these days IME

that's the only one I like from your choice I'm afraid!

Clary · 20/03/2011 00:51

Lots and lots of James hereabouts!

DS1 (11) had 3 in his class last year; one each in DD and DS2's classes and I know lots of others too.

I like Keir cause of Keir Hardie too (DS1 is named after hero of ours in similar way Grin) but it's a tricky name.

I like Gabriel but DH said no, too girly. I know a few more now tho so maybe OK.

EllenJane1 · 20/03/2011 00:57

"My name is Luca" by Suzanne Vega was a girl's name? Why not Lucas? Definitely a boy's name.

Keir, like the sentiment but will people think it's short for Keiran?

Dexter, sounds like a surname as does Flynn. Surnames as first names are a bit um ...chavvy.

Finn is a proper first name, as an alternative.

Gabriel might get a few Archangel jokes in school, but it's a nice name.

I like James but it's the only classic, therefore more popular choice.

Tillylove · 20/03/2011 08:24

I love Gabriel! My 16 year old brother is called this but he prefers Gabe these days! Also love Flynn and Dexter unusual. Luca quite popular round here, I know a couple! Love James but you do sound as if you like less traditional names so how about James for a middle name?

mamma2boyz · 20/03/2011 08:30

Luca - love it, have an Italian friend called Luca
Keir - tricky to spell...but if you love it who cares?
Flynn - I love it personally, also like Finn
Gabriel - great name, know a 6 year old Gabe and he is cute...
Dexter - also love it, show wont be around forever and not everyone watches it (I don't)
James - not that many around here - could be Jamie or Jimmy for short so quite flexible for him as he grows

Good luck choosing, we are having Ned (Edward) if we have another boy...

pilates · 21/03/2011 12:32

Only like James out of your choice.

herethereandeverywhere · 22/03/2011 20:41

My cousin has a Keir after Keir Hardie (and a Nye after Nye Bevan Wink)

I like it, also like Luca but it sounds a bit feminine in England (as opposed to in Europe) favourite is Dexter.

There are billions of James' out there and it transcends the generations. Some people like that safety, not me personally.

Onion1968 · 22/03/2011 20:45

I like Keir and James.

BelligerentGhoul · 22/03/2011 20:47

Luca, Gabriel or James do it for me! :) Must admit I prefer Luke or Lucas though.

Don't like Keir.

triskaidekaphile · 22/03/2011 20:54

I think Kier is pretty cool.

thinkingkindly · 22/03/2011 20:55

Luca - know two but like it
Keir - oh I love it. You should never tell your parents your name choices!
Flynn - mixed feelings, think it is a bit meaningless.
Gabriel - know a couple. it is too soft for me.
Dexter - keep seeing this on mn. dislike but it is growing on me.
James - don't know any baby James.

MerryMarigold · 22/03/2011 20:58

I like Dexter, Keir and Flynn. Lots of Gabriels around too, not that that's a problem. Just gone off it as a name, though did consider for ds2. You sound a bit cool and trendy, so I would give him a name that reflects that (ie. not James!). How about Bartholomew. I love it anyway! Also Jude.

WhipMeIndiana · 22/03/2011 21:01

realistically, Keir will be called Queer throughout school...don't do it.

Dexter is fine, also a cartoon character though (A scientific genius?)

PrincessScrumpy · 22/03/2011 21:06

I agree about Keir and bullying potential. I like the others, just take in the list and decide when you see ds. We had a name then dd was born and we reverted to a name we liked on honeymoon 3 years before as the name we had didn't suit her at all.

Never tell family your names before dc is born - if the mock then they will spoil the name - if you call dc the name and tell them then they can't say anything as that would be rude. Smile

magickcat · 22/03/2011 22:25

Thanks so much for your input, it's looking like Luca has edged ahead, heard the Suzanne Vega song a couple of days ago and it's been in my head ever since! Grin

I agree, about the problems with Keir, that was a worry of mine too even though I love it, similar worries about Gabriel, though they are both gorgeous names in my opinion!

James is just too popular, also with the middle name we are planning on it would be exactly the same as my dad's, which is a bit too weird.

I love Jude! Unfortunately one of dh's exes who was a bit of a loon was called Jude, such a shame otherwise that may well have been my first choice.

My original choice was Huxley, I love love love it!! Or I did until I told a few people who told me that there was some kids tv show that I somehow missed called Huxley Pig!! Sooo gutted. I was thinking more Aldous Huxley than Huxley the bloody pig lol!

I love your list! Just the sort of names I'd love to use but sadly DH doesn't agree with me...
I'd pick Dexter James or Luca. Fab names.
