Is this a crazy idea?

I am a big fan of giving family names as middle names. Both dcs have middle names after people in dh family that we wanted to honour by using their names. Neither are names I would ever have chosen otherwise.
Expecting dc3 now and would like to use my mums name as middle name. This is first dd and I'm close to my mum and would love to honour her by using her name.
Only problem being that my mum has always hated her name!
There's no one else I'd like to name a dd after and I'd hate to just pick a random middle name because it sou ds nice. I really want one with meaning.
So I am thinking of asking my mum her favourite name or what name she wishes she was called and using that!
That way mum will know she is a part of dds name and when she is older dd will know her middle name is after her nan but I won't have to use the name mum hates.

What do you think? Not sure if it's s bit of a silly idea or a good one!!!

Asking her to name your daughter is a lovely idea (and very very brave)...
..How about a variation on her name i.e. Mary instead of Marilyn, that sort of thing?

How about your mum's middle name? Or a name she wanted to use for you and was vetoed?

dan1981 · 18/03/2011 13:46

I think its a lovely idea. i also have a mum that doesn't like her own name and i was going to use a variation of her name but she didn't even want me to do that. In the end i came up with the idea that my mum can choose dd middle name (that i can veto is its terrible...lol)and she's very pleased with that. so i think the idea is a good one. unless as previously said maybe your mum has a middle name that you could use.....

My daughter's middle name is Rose as this is my mum's favorite flower.

Or could you perhaps combine part of your mum's first and middle name to come up with something?

I think its a really nice idea, hopefully you have an idea of your mums taste anyway so you know if you can trust her to pick something nice enough

lilaloves · 18/03/2011 20:30

Yes its a lovely idea,go for it.

It's a lovely idea. Go for it. If your mum can't think of anything then maybe you could use her maiden surname or something.

Finessa · 19/03/2011 19:35

Yes, it's a lovely idea. Do you like your mum's name? If it's a name you like and is only a MN maybe your mum would be delighted even if she doesn't like the name iyswim!

What's the name?!

Great idea as long as you're confident in your mother's taste. I know that my mother would have named my DD the name of a girl I hated at school (not intentionally).
