Hello, I've always been really fond of the name Bruno - but when the film came out I thought it would be ruined forever and crossed it off the list for DC1. BUT ... now pregnant again and I was wondering whether the film didn't end up having that big an impact. What do you all think? Thanks!

Ce he Bruno? (translated as who is Bruno? As in no one is going to remember that movie)

PepsiPopcorn · 17/03/2011 10:21

I quite like the name Bruno. I've never seen the film.

deliakate · 17/03/2011 10:26

Yes, its still a great name. Not sure about in the US - think Bruno made more of an impact there.....

Ooopsadaisy · 17/03/2011 10:30

Bruno Mars seems to be doing ok. (Despte nearly getting himself banged up).

Don't know if that's his real name though - probably not.

kreecherlivesupstairs · 17/03/2011 10:40

Oops, we discovered Bruno Mars a couple of weeks ago and both me and DH are in lurve. It isn't his real name.
Anyway, the OPs question, I doubt that anyone would associate the name with the film but it isn't one I would choose. It always reminds me of bears for some reason.
Go for, wait for it, Duncan. I love this name and won't rest until someone uses it.

Ooopsadaisy · 17/03/2011 10:45

kreecher - you are right - I forgot to comment on the film, didn't I! Doh!

I have never quite recovered from seeing the film, but it has not put me off the name. I think people will move on.

Wasn't there are also a Bruno in the film Fame? Wasn't he the nerdy musical one?

leeks70 · 17/03/2011 11:33

I LOVE the name and it was top of my list for my babies... but I had two girls so never used it. If I ever hear someone call it out in a playground ( only happened once or twice) it's really made me catch my breath, spin around and look. To me it evokes memories of the lovely brown haired, long-lashed musical Bruno from Fame. I don't think of the SBC movie at all. It's a name a lot of people had an opinion on when I was considering it. The worst one was someone who kept saying, "Know what I mean Harry?". Hmm.

I believe the meaning is "brown -haired" and I think it would be a little odd on a blonde child, just my thoughts.
Go for it.

munstersmum · 17/03/2011 11:42

Same as leeks70 - bit of a teen crush on Bruno from Fame. Not nerdy - just less street! Never saw the SBC film.

Go for it.

valbona · 17/03/2011 14:01

those were the answers I was looking for! thanks everyone.

(and I know what you mean about it somehow making you think of bears - although for me that's a plus..)

Middle name for eldest is Bruno (brown hair, big brown eyes)

Middle name for second is Rupert (blonde/blue)

We have a bear theme going on...

LetThereBeRock · 17/03/2011 14:36

I doubt that many people would think of the film when they heard it. I think it's a hideous name personally, not even the French can make it sound good imho.

MarshaBrady · 17/03/2011 14:39

That is irritating.. Who knew!

zingally · 17/03/2011 18:48

It's a dogs name. Sorry.

valbona · 17/03/2011 18:56

dogs! my second favourite after bears ... Bruno Max Rupert Valbona it shall be!

PMSL Judging by my snigger at the thread title, I'd say no it hasn't survived. Anyone who has seen the movie will remember itGrin. Please watch it before you decide.

Ooopsadaisy · 17/03/2011 19:49

SilkStalkings - Beware who you advise to watch this film. It's probably not one for your Daily Mail reading, PerUna garbed, Waitrose shopping MIL.

A friend of mine lent it to me saying - "Go on - I thought of you when I watched it - it's just your kind of thing."

She was waiting .... just waiting ... for my text message ..... the bitch.

The neighbours actually heard me squealing.

I still like the name Bruno though. Just don't dress him in yellow.

SilkStalkings · 17/03/2011 21:23

Heheh still sniggeringGrin.

Meglet · 17/03/2011 21:27

I love love love Bruno Smile. DD was going to be a Bruno if she was a boy.

IMO it works for a little boy but is also quite masculine for a grown up.

Please use it!

ValiumSingleton · 17/03/2011 21:37

I wanted to call my son Bruno five years ago. Everybody made such horrible faces. I still like it.

Aydeen · 18/03/2011 22:46

I love this name!! DH would never allow it though!

squeak2392 · 19/03/2011 16:32

If I'm honest, I think the film saved the name Bruno. It conjured up images of gay men for me BEFORE the film but now, somehow, it doesn't.
And as others have said, Bruno Mars will probably raise it's 'acceptability rating'.

Still don't like it though :P I'd only consider using it as a nn. For what, I do not know.
