Hi

We have finally got a short list of three girls names:

Thandie
Priya
Clara

Clara is the favourite at the moment but we keep on changing our minds! If we go for Clara we are thinking of Jessica for the middle name as we like 'CJ'.

Oh and for a baby boy we like Charlie.

Which of the girls names do you like and what do you think of Charles (nickname Charlie)?

I love Clara!

Not keen on Charlie as it's a bit downmarket where I live.

Flojo1979 · 13/03/2011 22:51

Dont particularly like any! Sorry u cant pleased everyone, but Clara is the least weird out of them. Dont like Charles at all, like Charlie tho, but dont see point in calling a kid one thing just the change it to something else.

PepsiPopcorn · 13/03/2011 22:53

Clara Jessica - lovely :)
Charles with Charlie for short - great :)

Not keen on Thandie or Priya, sorry.

randomimposter · 13/03/2011 22:55

Love Clara. Not keen on the other 2.

Have a real dilemma about Charles/Charlie. Like Charlie but really don't like Charles. And personally I have a thing about having a full name for grown-up formality/gravitas.

meditrina · 13/03/2011 22:55

Clara is lovely.

Thandie is OK.

Don't like Priya (sorry)

Clio99 · 13/03/2011 23:01

Jolister....I know what you mean about Charles as opposed to Charlie

We have a similar dilemma.

What does everyone think of:

Spencer
Oliver
Christian

??

Priya makes me think of a car for some reason, is it Prius? Can't go wrong with Clara - v.up and coming but also classic.

A1980 · 14/03/2011 00:54

I really like Priya but are you or your DH of Indian / Asian origin? If you're not then it might be a bit weird to give your child a Hindu name.

If neither of you are Indian / Asian then I would drop Priya go with Clara. I don't like Thandie, it sounds like Sandie said with a lisp.

olddeuteronomy · 14/03/2011 07:31

I like Clara and Charles - much better to have a full version of a name and call him Charlie for short.

Priya only if you are Asian/Hindu

Don't like Thandie, am never sure how to pronounce it.

Trinaluce · 14/03/2011 08:41

Priya's lovely, but I agree with everyone else: only use it if your origins 'justify' it. I know it as a pet name for an absolutely GORGEOUS little girl whose full name was Priyanka: biggest brown eyes the world has EVER seen!

Thandie sounds like Sandy with a lithp.

Clara's lovely and definitely my favourite of your list.

Charles is sweet too - DD has told everyone at nursery DC2 is going to be a little boy called Charlie. We haven't found out the sex and she knows no-one of that name so I've NO idea where she got that idea!

kreecherlivesupstairs · 14/03/2011 09:20

Clara is the only one I like, unless you are of Asian heritage then Priya is a lovely name too.
Charlie is a good name for a buy, but not as good as Duncan or Gavin. Spencer is trying too hard and i don't like the othr two either.

growing3rdbump · 14/03/2011 09:23

Love the names Priya, Thandie (pronounced Tandy) and Clara. I do think Priya is an Asian name, and totally gorgeous.

pilates · 14/03/2011 09:32

I like Clara Jessica best and Charles is also nice.

diddl · 14/03/2011 09:50

I like Jessica best!

Also like Charles & Oliver.

PepsiPopcorn · 14/03/2011 10:19

Spencer - too surnamey, don't like
Oliver - like
Christian - like

Mum2Pea · 14/03/2011 10:51

Priya is a gorgeous name! and means dear one .......
i love it

agree that might be a bit too 'out there' if neither of you is asian but then again, why can't you use an indian name ......... dont actually think it matters - as long as you like it!

alexaj · 14/03/2011 19:51

Priya if you're Asian. Otherwise, no.
Not keen on Thandie, so... Clara. Although it's a bit of an annoying name as I know someone with that name and I always forget whether I'm meant to pronounce it Claire-a and Clar-a.

And no to Charles if he gets nicknamed Charlie. Bit common.

mathanxiety · 14/03/2011 20:04

I like Oliver and Charles (nn Charlie).
Like Clara, then Priya, however, I don't like Jessica. There are lots of other names beginning with J.

Clio99 · 14/03/2011 20:14

OK...some more possibilities for you all to consider:

Girls names
Chelsy
Ana
Carla
Jasmine
Elsa
Eleanor
Erin

Boys
Steffan
William
Charles

Any other suggestions for a boy...tend to prefer traditional but not too boring or popular, even though I'm sure William is a popular name!

OP posts:
alexaj · 14/03/2011 20:17

Chelsy - NO NO NO. Very very chavvy and spelt horrendously too.
Really like Elsa and Erin.
Jasmine is OK.
Not keen on rest.

Like Steffan (not spelt that way though).
William and Charles - no way. Too Royal Family. Too traditional. Too BORING.

MooMooFarm · 14/03/2011 20:17

I love Clara. Sorry but don't like the other two (in your first post). Not too keen on Charlie/Charles - sorry.

Of your second list I like Ana, Jasmine, Elsa, Eleanor and Erin - but not as much as Clara!

I like William more than Steffan or Charles, but would be put off by how popular it is (loads of Williams at DC school).

Underachieving · 14/03/2011 23:59

Clara is gorgeous.
Priya is cool, unusual and is growing on me. It will no doubt be on my mental shortlist for DC3 within days. I don't think it matters if you're not Indian, names have to arrive in other cultures eventually, most of our so-called British names are Greek, Germanic, Scandinavian, French or Roman in origin.
Thandie is not for me but it's OK.

Spencer is a bit wet.
Oliver is lovely.
Christian is fine if you are Christian.

Chelsy is awful, don't do it, some of your other choices are far better.
Ana is the way people in the know write Anorexia Nervosa for short. Spell it Anna and it's fine, quite nice actually.
Carla is dated.
Jasmine is dated.
Elsa is Ok.
Eleanor is nice and has nice elegant associations.
Erin is alright, but perhaps slightly trendy for me.

Steffan isn't great but it's usable.
William is alright but so very popular.
Charles is alright but doesn't grab me, better as a middle name I think.
