Yes to Rhys no to Reece

Really struggling for boys names and am starting to panic that if this baby is a boy it will be nameless for a while!!

DH and myself don't agree on many names, but there are very little i even like to begin with. I've always kinda liked Rhys and my DH likes it too but is it weird that im getting put off it by the thought that people would think its spelt 'Reece'- i really hate American names esp for boys and just think 'Rhys' is like a totally different name??

Btw we are irish with no Welsh/English connections but that doesn't bother me at all.

Rhys is the correct spelling.

It's a lovely name, and most people will spell it correctly, especially if you insist.

Where do you live? I do think people will automatically spell it Reece but then lots of people spell lost of names wrong so it wouldn't put me off.

Rhys is the automatic spelling for me too, and I am not Welsh.

DS1 is called Rhys, AFAIK nobody has ever tried to spell it Reece. We are Welsh though.

We have more trouble with DS2's name, which is Siôn, as some people spell it as Sean/Shaun.

b-i-law is a Rhys,and doesn't have a problem with Reece-spellers. do it.

Rhys is the correct spelling.
Reece looks like you don't know how to spell the name.

I haven't got an automatic spelling, I would ask but I do also consider Rhys to be correct. To me Rhys and Reece are like different names too so you're not the only one.

I assume most of you are in the England/scotland/Wales so I can see why most of you think Rhys automatically. I just think in Ireland Rhys is really uncommon and alot of people have American sounding names over here. It is weird that i really dont like the name Reece but like Rhys?

Here (in Wales) Rhys is pronounced differently to Reece/Rees as the "Rh" sound is different to "R"

I think it's pronounced more with the tongue at the roof of the mouth,( a slightly throaty noise) whereas Reece is more wit hthe lips and chin jutted forwards - 'cleaner' but much less attractive for it.

bit like my post name which should have an 'h' after the 'R'- it isn't just a 'row' noise.

Ah yes i get it- but i think you would only pronounce it that way if u were actually welsh, have a welsh friend over here so must get her to say it to hear the difference, but i still think i would go for the more 'reece' sounding pronounciation.

Technically in Welsh you would roll the R for Rees/Reece from the front of your tongue whereas for Rhys the Rh is softer.

This is how you would pronounce Rhys. It is like you don't pronounce Rhian as Rian.

I have one of each in my class. Can't tell you which spelling I prefer just in case....

Definitely prefer Rhys over Reece. I agree with nickelbabysnatcher, Reece looks like you didn't know how to spell it.

Reece just seems darn rude to me - if someone is going to choose a Welsh name, they should spell it correctly. If they can't be bothered, they should choose a name from their own language!
