What do you think of Violet as a name? (For a DD obviously).

Also how do you pronounce it? (Not that I can't pronounce it, but other people sound different and I'm curious.)

Hi lovely name. Was my choice if DS had been a girl. I pronounce it Vi (ryming with pie) let.

fizzyliftinggas · 06/03/2011 13:08

I love it, we have considered this for our next one too.
I pronounce it sort of Vi-a-let, but the a is sort of swiftly over IYSWIM, not exaggerated

nappydaysagain · 06/03/2011 13:09

rhyming Blush

pumpkinpoppet · 06/03/2011 13:47

I considered it, as it is very pretty. I decided that being called Vi was not. So I guess it depends if you mind Vi or if you can avoid it...

Underachieving · 06/03/2011 13:54

Thanks Punpkin, I hadn't thought of Vi. Cancel that then, not liking Violet anymore.

Back to the drawing board.

I like it, and the nn could be Lettie.

deliakate · 06/03/2011 16:11

You only have to add one letter to get violent, which I don't part like either.

Underachieving · 06/03/2011 17:07

I would call her Lettie, but other people would definately at some point call her Vi. I can't imagine being one of those mothers who say "it's JohnATHAN not Johnny"- that would get tedious. It is a natural British habit to play with words, it's not fair to expect people not to do what comes naturaly just because I'm being precious. No no, I'll have a rethink.

Also like Vera, Vita and Iris.. sound similar-ish to me.

bambiandthumper · 06/03/2011 22:42

Fab name :o
Ours gets called Letty as a nn by us, I can't stand Vi.

monkeyslut · 07/03/2011 14:39

I love it.

Maybe use it as a middle name instead?

MazzzaG · 07/03/2011 22:38

How about viola Or valetta maybe

Underachieving · 07/03/2011 22:44

Good idea about using it as a middle name. Also Valetta sounds pretty and solves the Vi thing, never heard of it before so will look it up.

Violet is lovely. As bambiandthumper says, reckon you'd be able to avoid Vi if you went for Letty instead.

I love it, was in our shortlist. Went for another flower in the end.
