Not for me...

SIL's best friend is 6 months pregnant with a little boy.
Thinking of these 2 names. I'm not too sure but prefer Ellis.

Any thoughts?

I prefer Ennis, but really you should be getting her onto MN Grin

PrincessScrumpy · 01/03/2011 19:56

The only Ellis I know is a girl - she's very naughty and has massive attitude issues. (I work in a secondary school). It means I rule out quite a few names this way I'm afraid.

meditrina · 01/03/2011 19:57

I think Ellis is a fabulous name.

meditrina · 01/03/2011 19:58

(and it's always a boy's name to me)

PepsiPopcorn · 01/03/2011 20:16

Ellis

agora1 · 01/03/2011 20:17

I thought Ellis was a girls name too...

eatyourveg · 01/03/2011 20:39

lots of males called Ellis in Wales - I've never heard of it being used for a girl

purepurple · 01/03/2011 20:42

I prefer Ellis (and only know it as a boy's name too)

GetOrfMoiLand · 01/03/2011 20:43

OOH Ennis is a lovely name. Much prefer that to Ellis (which to my mind is a girl's name, as I went to school with a female Ellis).

sparkleshine · 01/03/2011 20:43

Not heard it for a girl...have only known of 1, a colleague at work, his son is an Ellis.

Can pass it on though, might make a difference

Ellis is historically a variant of Elias (and therefore Elijah); it's also an anglicised version of the old Welsh boys' name Elisud.

mayanna123 · 01/03/2011 21:08

Both lovely names for a boy.

What does your SIL's friend think, after all it is her baby Smile.

sparkleshine · 02/03/2011 08:45

She can't decide herself. Ooh I like Elias and Elijah also. Might put them on my list for when TTC. Will give SIL those options also though to give her.

Does nobody else think penis (or at least Dennis Pennis) when they see Ennis?

GwendolineMaryLacey · 02/03/2011 13:32

Love Ennis, much nicer than Ellis which is a bit too popular for me.

mamsnet · 02/03/2011 13:36

Ennis is a town in the West of Ireland.. To me it would be like calling him Oxford or Milton Keynes..

kiwidreamer · 02/03/2011 15:50

Yep my first thought was the playground teasing of penis - why would a parent take the risk... Ellis is ok and only a boys name to me personally but I much prefer Elias or Elijah (nn Eli?)

mayanna123 · 02/03/2011 16:52

What about the teasing potential of Willy with William - that is much more likely than saying Peenis from Ennis (they don't even rhyme...Hmm

Onion1968 · 02/03/2011 22:26

my best female friend is called Ellis. It is a lovely name

SilkStalkings · 03/03/2011 09:36

Suppose it's no worse than Virginia / Vagina.

DandyDan · 03/03/2011 10:35

Ellis is more of a girl's name, I think - nicknames for it seem more feminine - Elle, or Ellie.

Ennis makes me think of Ennis del Mar in Brokeback Mountain.

lilyberry · 03/03/2011 23:32

DandyDan - My first thought was Ennis from Brokeback Mountain.

SilkStalkings · 04/03/2011 16:05

Well surely that would be the final nail in the coffin?

ShowOfHands · 04/03/2011 16:06

Ennis Del Mar

I adore that film. Great name.

Northernlurker · 04/03/2011 16:12

Enis is the name of the BNP candidate for yesterday'e by election. That must be the female version I suppose.
