What do you think of Raya as a girl's name? It's listed on Mumsnet's Baby Name Finder.

I called my DD this but we spelt it Rhaya as it seems the proper way of spelling it IMO.

Wot does everyone else think? Did I spell it incorrectly? Confused

It's quite nice (much nicer than Freya), although I've never heard of it.

greenzebra · 28/02/2011 15:11

I think its a lovely name and would spell it either way, but I think I like the way you have spelt it.

Dawnyann · 01/03/2011 13:57

Not many people have heard of it to be fair. We nicked it off a friend who's dad called Ray had passed away & so they named their DD Raya in memory.
We loved it so much though just HAD to steal it! :)

It's very brave of you to come here and ask what people think of such an unusual name after you have used it for your daughter!

ChickensHaveNoEyebrows · 01/03/2011 14:29

I like it. It has a nice, roll off the tongue sound.

Pterosaur · 01/03/2011 14:34

I know a woman called Rhea (pron. Raya). Her father is Greek. I like it.

sparkleshine · 01/03/2011 20:26

I like it...really like it actually.
Think I will have to put it on my baby names list for future reference.
Also like Freya

mamalovesmojitos · 01/03/2011 20:30

Like it.

Dawnyann · 02/03/2011 10:42

Ahh it's nice to know i've inspired you sparkleshine and MamaLazarou it wouldn't have made any difference to me if everyone had hated it cos I love it & my DD definatley suits it :o although im not sure any child doesn't grow into their name no matter how unusual it may be.

Thanks for everyones comments, im really new on here so not too up on all the acronymns and the way things work as yet but everyone seems very nice :)

Raya is a Bulgarian name actually... quite a few Raya, although not within top 10...

MackerelOfFact · 02/03/2011 13:05

I work with one, she's Russian. It's a pretty name but she is utterly mental so I wouldn't use it myself.

Umnitsa · 03/03/2011 00:42

In Russian Raya is a nickname for Raisa (as in Raisa Gorbachova). Very rare these days, think 60-year-old factory worker.

Mum2Pea · 03/03/2011 13:56

Its also an indian names meaning Flow

Firawla · 03/03/2011 18:36

I like the sp Raya more than Rhaya as the h seems unnecessary personally but the name sounds really nice, I like it
